I think my best ever get-rid-of to a request was 3 traffic cones! Someone reasonably local (within 2 miles) wanted some to block an area outside their house temporarily for a hearse (seemed reasonable to me) - I was so happy to see the cones we had go! :D

Kondoed a large evergreen honeysuckle today - it will grow back but had really taken over and during the last high winds we had it brought the trellis down. Trying to make sure we make maximum use of our garden waste collection as we pay £33 a year on top of CT for 25 collections a year - going to make sure the bin is well and truly full each time:D So far this year have cut down a huge jasmine and now the honeysuckle. Next time I plan to dig out a large patch of allium bulbs and another of a hardy creeping geranium - again taking over!!

Bedding - our local night shelter is after this at the moment, as they're opening additional beds for cold weather.

A neighbour who pays for a green bin (£65 a year round me, also for 25 collections and on top of CT) has lent me his bin for 3 consecutive collections now, he doesn't have anything in his tiny garden that needs doing. But he taught me a great lesson: I now use a big branch - three feet long, maybe four inches in diameter - to mash the waste down. It can look like it's two thirds full, but if you mash it, like you're threshing corn or something, it collapses to at most half the amount, you can get *so* much more in!

If you cut stuff up small you can also get a lot more in your green bin. My dear old Dad used to climb on a bench then climb in the top of the bin to trample it down when necessary. We tend to do a lot of shoving with a spade.

Thanks Greent....some there that I had forgotten about!!

Is there a way of pinning this at the beginning of the thread??

An addition for bras....my local DW gym has a bin in the foyer for bras....anybody can put them in dont need to be member. Just need to be in reasonable cond.

Bedding - local animal charities might take them RSPCA certainly does. Again my local Petsat H0me collects old bedding/towels etc. I have offered loads them on Fr**cycle/Fr**gle for pet bedding and usually its a volunteer from local animal rescue shelter will take them :)

Its always worthwhile looking on fr**gle and see if there is anybody asking for just the item you have and dont want!! The week I got rid of our solid fuel aga there was someone on fr**gle asking for coal scuttles and I was able to give them 3....serendipity :)

I'm reading on a tablet at the moment, but when I'm next on my proper PC I'll do a cut and paste and edit it into the first post.

  • -Makeup. Again, we've both got items we've used in the past but no longer use. Some are mostly full and it seems pretty wasteful to just throw away. Anything that's gone bad (e.g. separated nail polish) has been binned - but is there a better use or place for used makeup?

Hi, DD and I have cleared out a lot of make-up recently, and sent them to Give and Makeup who pass on 'opened but lightly-used makeup' to refuges. Search under Caroline Hirons / Give and Makeup for details.

I had another go at clothes yesterday, there's a large bin bag for the CS. When I did them last time it was summer so focused on summer clothes. Now in the depths of winter I can see the winter things more clearly and a few jumpers really didn't spark joy!

I have 3 unopened packs of pants to go with the 30 odd pairs in use, I must be strong next time I see them on offer and leave them in the shop!

Are they girls/ladies undies? Days for Girls need new knickers for their sanitary packs.

I have returned from a fab weekend in York, and husband and dds have returned from an enjoyable weekend in Paris.

My friend and I had a good catch-up, enjoyed traditional English meals and cakes :D, and did some essential shopping (M&S vests, fresh fudge, National Trust leather handbag on a discount, etc). The weather was lovely, but cold. I will see if there is any room in the budget to take my family there this year.
