KonMari 2018 - The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up

I have floor plans from RM and will estimate doors at 3`.
I'm always wary of offering advice as there are many local variations / traditions but I was always taught that the door is 29 1/4" - 29 1/2" but the frame, i.e. outer edge of architrave to outer edge of architrave is usually 3' - like I say, there are regional variations: older houses may have wider architrave, modern ones narrower.
I've actually just checked this room - the door is 29 5/8", the opening is 30 3/8" and the architrave is 35 7/8".
Sorry - for some reason I can't get the Alt+codes to work, but hopefully you'll understand what I've typed.
If in doubt, measure one of your own doors, remembering that with the angled opening of the door (most don't open fully back) the usable gap will be less than the width of the opening IYSWIM. The opening here of 30 3/8" gives a usable 'gap' of 28 5/8".0 -
kittie - we've changed most of our rads with flooring in place - sure, they've usually been changed for the same width radiator (but more efficient/ a double instead of single/ new when old ones leaked etc) but not always. We have some rather attractive bendy bits of copper piping from floors/ walls where widths have changed ( personally I like it to stay copper, rather than be painted)I am the master of my fate; I am the captain of my soulRepaid mtge early (orig 11/25) 01/09 £124616 01/11 £89873 01/13 £52546 01/15 £12133 07/15 £NILNet sales 2024: £200

In the spirit of enquiry, I just measured my internal doors. Architrave to architrave they are 28 inches but the door itself reduces that to 26.5 inches. I take my bicycle in and out of the living room, around a right angle into the hall, which is only 33 inches wide.
Haven't dinged any paintwork yet, been doing this almost every day for several months, but am very careful.
Just spent about 2 hours dismantling my old PC's tower. I have now reduced it to sections of metal casing, motherboard and RAM (the original and the extra 100% that the Computer Wizard decided to pimp it up with a few years ago), recyclable wire, recyclable all-metal smaller elements, non-recyclable plastic carp and some questionable metal-and-electronic bits like the power unit (I think that's what it is) and the three drives; CD, DVD and floppy drives.Younger readers may have to ask a wrinkly what the last of those is.
The metal and the wire will be taken in by my chazzer who weigh these in the the scrap trade as well as rag to the rag merchant. I don't know if their company can take the drives, there's quite a bit of metal weight in there but I can't get the gubbins out of the casing to separate the bits of electonics from the metal. I shall ask before I do anything with them.
I suspect the motherboard etc will end up in the electronic section at the tip. I know these contain useful metals inc small amounts of gold, but I don't think the polluting process of recovering them is done locally.I found that a surprisingly enjoyable way to spend an evening but then, I've always been a bit of an oddity. I vacuumed a shocking amount of dust outta there, too.
I am now rewarding myself with a late supper of steak and chips (4 thin steaks for £2.99 in Tosspots, one at a time is plenty for me) and will have ice cream for dessert. Because I'm so worth it........... :rotfl:Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

my doors are big, doors 33" and 39 from one side to the other. I think her doors were quite big, they are the original doors all painted white.
I found a local locksmith on chekatrade and have noted his number
Now another bit of advice needed about phones, I have only ever used an old brick of a mobile and only for car safety. I expect that will do for a bit, if I take numbers with me. I am with plusnet and know that my bb home phone contract is about to expire anyway. I will need all this stuff at the new house and should add mobile to the package. At what stage should I ask for a new house phone number?
I have to learn how to use a mobile from scratch. :eek:0 -
Kittie ask your DS to research phones for you, then he can teach you how to use it while he's with you
I would research your phone & bband options in the new address online - each company will have its own install times.2021 Decluttering Awards: ⭐⭐🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇 2022 Decluttering Awards: 🥇

Kittie, I'm a plusnet customer for my BB and landline and have always been very satisfied with them. They're often emailing me offering a package with a mobile as well, so maybe check that out?
I have an android smartphone sitting in front of me. It needs charging every couple of days. My button phone needs charging about once a week and does what I need to do. The smartphone is being sold to a pal any day now, I can use it but don't like it and will be glad to see the back of it, frankly.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

A standard door is 900 x 2100. Some, such as ensuite bathrooms might be 750 wide.
Don't know what that is in old money and, of course, they aren't all necessarily standard...I wanna be in the room where it happens0 -
GQ now you've got your new pooter set up can we have an update on what we should be doing on the allotment pleeease? I really enjoyed your week by week instalments, it helped so much to know what I should be doing.
Now that DH is so much better and can use the strimmer again we have kondoed the hayfield that our grass paths had turned into and can actually find our allotment again. A few weeds also kondoed and we have found the onions as well
I think this year will not be very productive despite the glorious weather because of necessity I was limited in what I could get done and things were late going in. Having said that, the runner beans are flowering even though they haven't got to the top of their poles yet and the courgettes obviously like this weather. Three plants all flourishing and with multiple flowers forming. Two others coming on more slowly as they are in a shady spot but that should give me a succession of courgettes (I can see me groaning "will they never end?" come August)
We've started to harvest our new potatoes as well and I've sown some spinach where the first row was cleared. Bearing in mind the disruption from DH's operation, things are better than I dared to hopeIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0 -
Kittie - the only reason to take up flooring to replace rads is if the pipes are too close to the walls. Modern rads are thicker (even the slimline ones can be a pain). Our downstairs pipes are all cemented into the floor so any change of rads involved new pipework being added to make them fit. The ones upstairs need the floor up to cut the pipes and rejig. Our rads were installed when the house was built in 1963 so we had issues going from imperial to metric but I did find some telescopic fittings for some of the rads I've replaced and they've been amazing. Maybe ask your project manager along for a look or take some photos of the rads and fitting that are there and your plumber will be able to advise.
We ripped up the carpets here the hour after we'd got the keys and had thermal vinyl put down everywhere (aside from the stairs) as the little old lady before us had lived here since 1973 and never owned a hoover - no amount of hoovering was going to get out that many years of dust. Once the carpets were up I was sweeping up a good 3 inches of thick dust from each room, it was hideous."Start every day off with a smile and get it over with" - W. C. Field.0
