Hi folks, long time no post.
My wife's Win 7 laptop is falling apart so I have ordered her a Dell XPS-15 which will come with Win 10 pre-installed.
I would like to continue to use Windows Live Mail 2012 as the email client since we both use and like it on our Win 7 machines. I am aware that Microsoft no longer support it but I am wondering if it is still usable.
Q1. So has anyone had any success installing and running WLM 2012 under the latest version of Win 10 or have MS now crippled it completely with their latest updates? If you succeeded, any tips I should know?
Q2. If WLM really is a no-no what alternative email clients (preferably free) would you recommend? I have heard that the W10 client app is a real lemon and I tried Outlook once and didn't like it, so is there anything with a quick learning curve that would make a good substitute for WLM?
Thanks.

It's fine!0 -
Thunderbird maybe......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -
Another vote for Thunderbird. You can file your emails in multiple directories and sub-directories which some others don't allow0

Thanks for the comments so far. Something else I obviously need to consider is getting existing WLM emails imported to whatever client we chose. Does the App and also Thunderbird use the .eml format?... DaveHappily retired and enjoying my 14th year of leisureI am cleverly disguised as a responsible adult.Bring me sunshine in your smile0

Hello Oblivion, good to see you back !!
Yes - use IMPORT/EXPORT tools addon - you can import and export as .EML0 -
i run windows live mail on my HP Envy windows 10 laptop with no issues at all. i had to google how to do it and from memory it entails downloading the microsoft essentials software.
if i can do it, most can! i just like it as an email client (probably just because i've used it for so many years).0 -

Thanks Tony, that is good news to hear it still runs ok. I'm going to be trying that first when the new laptop arrives.
Like you, I like it as an email client and I really cannot understand why Microsoft dumped such a fine product.
I have found what appears to be a safe site from which to download the Essentials software so it looks like we are good to go.... DaveHappily retired and enjoying my 14th year of leisureI am cleverly disguised as a responsible adult.Bring me sunshine in your smile0 -

I used to use Windows Live Mail on Windows 10 until it lost the ability to access my Hotmail or Outlook email accounts.
I've now switched to Microsoft's Mail app, and it does everything I need, which is just to read email on 3 different accounts.
On one computer, on which the Mail app wasn't working, I installed eM Client.
I found it fine, and quite stylish, but rather sluggish in operation compared to Mail.
On Linux I always use Thunderbird, so have no problems with that either, but the interface is a bit dated.0 -
I’m still using WLM on a Desktop that was upgraded from Windows 7 to W10. I also found a workaround online for accessing for Hotmail via WLM. No problems to date.0
