Wi-Fi repeaters without power?

Just briefly ..

Major renovation project on 4 floors converting to apartments with a lift
Phone line in the basement (for the lift) with a router to provide wi-fi to apartments

Sparky has wired 'data cable' to all floors, so we can put wi-fi repeaters on each level, BUT he hasn't wired power next to where the the data cable comes out

Is there a 'powerless' wi-fi repeater that we can use or do we need to get him to retro fit power??

Each floor has a separate electric meter.

  • You won't find one that doesn't use *any* power but you can send power over the network cables you have installed. Search for "power over Ethernet" or "PoE"

As above, You just need a PoE switch in your basement and most AP's will take their power from that

Hope it's a high-end router with VLANS otherwise everyone in the apartments will be able to scan each others computers on the network.

Any half decent managed PoE switch will have the ability to vlan them all off.

One of these for example :-

If you are after simply extending the wifi you do not need to use the cat 5 socket, you can simply use a wifi repeater that plugs into any power socket within range of a wifi signal, something like this https://www.devolo.co.uk/article/devolo-wifi-repeater-ac/?gclid=CjwKCAiA4vbSBRBNEiwAMorER-ZU0QK2RHKWzGVMutuV44q6GUw2E-hp-aQnHeASE2aYuEGxaNtyPhoCfGQQAvD_BwE

(you can get them far cheaper, just an illustration).

It basically picks up the wifi and amplifies it.

But why are you providing broadband to the apartments rather than having a central phone connection point in the basement where BT can bring in more lines and have one more cable to each apartment whereby the residents can choose to have their own telephone line and broadband?

Also have to say, how many apartments will there be and how many people will have access to the wifi? What speed broadband do you have? Can't help but think that everyone jumps on the wifi at the same time you are going to have severe sped problems.

To connect their mobile devices to!

Even if they have different electricity meters?

    Sorry - didn't explain fully :o

We have FTTC and an estimated speed of 60 meg

It doesn't matter if they have different meters they pick up the WiFi and rebroadcast it. I am not talking about using the power cables for the internet, it is plugged in for power and nothing else. It is like an unwired access point.

Estimated speed of 60 meg may well mean the WiFi is slow, but as it is holiday lets it will not be so bad.
