  • Please can I join in? I am quite good at NSD because we live out in the sticks and I tend to do several things in one go when I go into town. I have a weakness for crystal.......our local hospice shop has always been my downfall, but I was really good yesterday, I took DB out for a cream tea and did not go up into the charity shop, so came home without anything. The money for the tea came from my pocket money as does any plants I buy for the garden.

We have recently been on holiday to Cornwall, we stayed in a very nice B & B had a great breakfast, I bought sandwiches and fruit from Morrisons as we needed them. We ate out 4 times, the rest of the time we had supper in the breakfast room at our B & B. If any one needs a reccy contact me it was really excellent. I had a budget and we came in under it, so I was well pleased.

Born during the war and having a grandmother who had lived through 2 world wars made me very aware about making a penny do the work of two. She was left a widow with 2 small children in 1925, there was no insurance payout then. I had 4 children so frugality was our watchword when they were small. I have carried it through into our life over the past 60 years. Cook from scratch etc. and saving what I can.

I shop mostly at Aldi with an occasional shopnat Morrison for the things I cannot get at Aldi.

I have recently de cluttered a lot of stuff including a dresser that was in the sitting room and things that have been hiding in the hall cupboard.
I sold the dresser. We have an Emmaus shop in the town and they have taken everything I have offered them and been so grateful. They help people who are moving into accommodation and provide them with beds etc, they also raise money from the shop. I was in recently I gratified to see two plates I had given them in a display cabinet for sale.

We have a fairly productive veg and fruit garden, what we cannot use I freeze and some of it goes to a group at the local chapel. Just recently it has been rhubarb. I have frozen quite a bit to see us through the winter, I will be pulling some more in the week to take with us to the coffee morning where we meet to chat once a month. Mind you the strawberries that are just starting to develop will all be going either into us or into the freezer.

I would be delighted if you would join us - welcome :D

I always feel bad if I spend at all especially on eating out but you've really said something that has struck a chord and that is that I should give myself a budget. I will definitely do this in the future.

Also, I forgot the saying 'making a penny do the work of two' I really have been trying to do this especially buying at our local car boot sales and selling on ebay. Even though we have been away visiting children and grandchildren for the past week, we have still sold 7 items (we did put on our listings that we could not post out until today)

I'm really looking forward to your future postings :D Do you have a particular savings goal?

  • Today will not be a NSD, it library day and I have to pay £2 for books we ordered on the mobile van which comes to the village every month.

My fiscal fast is so that we can build up a emergency fund. For the past few years we lived in privately rented houses, in 2015 I decided that we should apply for supported housing from the council. We had to borrow money to fund a move in 2014 when we were forced to move 3 months after a previous move. Now that has been paid off I want to build up a fund 'in case'.

I have several accounts with our bank. One for our current account and then savings accounts for things like car and house insurance, car repairs......OH has a savings account for his spending money as do I and we have an ISA account we are saving in. All our bill payments are made by direct debit, so I know that all our bills are being paid.

I have a budget for pocket money £45 per month each. Housekeeping £120 a month.

I had 4 children and worked full time for their teenage years. I do a menu plan each month as I did then and also freezer audit. I used to shop once a month, but I can longer cope with that so instead I shop every other week, it works well. At the end of the month any money left in my housekeeping budget goes into my savings tin which pays for treats when we are on holiday. I put around £1500 away each year for holidays, we usually manage to have 2.

My big problem is spending on the garden.........I cannot pass a plant without it jumping into my basket.........OH grows most of our veg and fruit in the summer and I do try to freeze stuff against the use in winter, but I do also give stuff away. It works both ways, we get apples in the autumn.

I had better shut up this has evolved into a screed.

    Fiscal Fast Day 141

I was very smug up until about 9pm thinking I had bagged another NSD and then I went on Amazon and bought 'The Detectorists' box set. Whoops :o

    Fiscal Fast Day 142

Phew! Back on track when it comes to spending :D

A few bits from Poundstretcher that we needed including 3 bottles of 2 litre 7up Mojito reduced to 35p a bottle.

Also £6 was spent at our local charity shop but that is an ebay re-sale

I met my friend at The Range for a drink and a natter and my preferred drink is usually a deluxe hot chocolate but a coconut and jam slice was screaming at me, eat me, eat me! Now normally I would have both but being on the fast I settled for the slice as I can have hot chocolate at home. It was lush, I made the right choice.

I did succumb for £2 on 2 items of stationery and I plead guilty to treating myself :rotfl: The good thing about being a stationery addict is that I use it on a daily basis but I probably could still supply WH Smith's for a millennium :rotfl:

    Fiscal Fast Day 143

Our DD2 is down with us for the summer and is a fantastic cook so we took her to Bookers to see how our new shopping regime works and what Bookers have to offer. We picked up a few RTCs and a couple of items at full price that we had run out of.

Onwards to Rosudgeon for the car boot sale and I bagged a couple of items for re-sale and some staedtler pens for me :o I really do need to go to Stationery Addicts Anonymous

Hi chums back from my holiday and bought a couple of items of food home but also dropped into Aldi's to restock what I needed with fresh stuff and was pleased it only came to about £17 odd so no more shopping now for at least a week as I have lots of hoilday washing to do and a fair bit of stuff to use up in the freezer as well.

Treated myself to a masive bag of left over balls of wool from a CS whilst on holiday that someone had donated and it only cost a fiver and there is enough wool in there for lots of Xmas gift to make throughout the summer, plus lots leftover for my charity blankets, very pleased with the haul, all different colours and all double knit and at the bottom of the big bag was a cloth bag full of wooden knitting needles.Must have been about 25 plus balls of wool that had never been used :):):) a real bargain for a keen knitter like myself
