This clueless Tory Government needs to wean itself off the Thatcherite dogma that perpetuates firms like these getting anywhere near taxpayers money. Talk now of its MOJ responsibilities being brought into Government control again.

Brown was the one that cooked the books. By using PFI to keep debt off the Governments books. Labours hospital and school building programme didn't come cheaply. We are all paying the cost now.

I thought that you would be happy with outsourced services coming back in house. Great strides have been made in this area in recent years. Operations are being bench marked against providers such as Capita and Steria. In certain areas the service costs are within 10%. With obvious further savings on the way. Being the public sector pace of change is slow. But certainly is heading in the right direction.
  • There are many schools of thought here and I'm just interested in peoples opinions. Do you let it go bust and have Xooo's of people made redundant? Does the state prop it up or just nationalise it completely? If there are (potentially lucrative) contracts in the pipeline then would a rival not buy it? (The last point is that if it is just a management issue that has caused it to be where it is?

I'm quite naive to the intricacies of business but you can always learn something from a healthy debate.

It's a big company for any one other company to take over - it has nearly 50,000 employees and a pension deficit of over half a £billion. It is in trouble for a reason - so why would another co. take over all of it? More likely some of the more profitable contracts will be picked up by a number of other companies rather than all going to one.

One option is to put the Company into Administration. Have a read.

Which raises the question of how stable Kier is if some of its major contracts are with Carillion. Or Serco who have been buying up Carillion's Health Care business
Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.

    Carillion claims:
Our commitment to sustainability runs through all our activities. We create lasting benefits through developing skills and employment opportunities, minimising environmental impacts and improving local prosperity. Our sustainable approach gives us a competitive advantage through innovation, efficiency, responsiveness and building strong partnerships.

Its Chairman is Philip Green who advised Cameron on Corporate Responsibility. What on earth could have gone wrong?

It's (Kier's) contracts for HS2 are with the government (effectively) - Carillion is part of the consortium and can be replaced or removed from the consortium.
