Moving data and apps to new phone

I've a MotoG4 running Android 5.1 and will be moving to a G5 soon which I think runs v7. Can anyone give me advice on how best to transfer data and apps to the new phone?

I have a gmail account with back up my data and automatic restore enabled but I'm not sure how complete this is. What does this actually save for reinstalling?

There are no music or photos that are important as I have those on my PC but I want to be sure that I don't lose my phone contacts and text messages.

Moving apps across is not vital but it would be a pain to reinstall them, although maybe I should probably take the opportunity to weed some out I don't use. But I would not want to lose photos and videos currently in Whatsapp.
