Banks tend to offer for instant(ish) payments (although in different terminology)

CHAPS payments - 1-2 days (up to £30)
    BACS payments - 4-5 days (£15)

Either way, they are a rip-off. My bank (Lloyds) fails to cover itself in glory for any of the above services.

All the information above is correct -

    Urgent payment - Western Union
Possible future payments - Set up an 'emergency fund', separate Nationwide account, or even an 'emergency' credit card, it's all in the above. Backpackers / gap year students don't tend to make this type of emergency preparation, so often parents should..!

You're mixing UK Interbank payments with International Interbank payments.

I guessed, that if her daughter was using a UK bank, the simplest solution would have been to visit the nearest branch of her daughter's bank to deposit cash.
So, it's likely that it's an Australian bank account.

But in that link it says 2-3 days.

The fastest and cheapest way of getting money to her would be if she had a cash card for a UK bank/savings account. You pay cash in at a branch and she can withdraw it from an ATM within a couple minutes for a fee of a pound or two. It's probably worth setting this up next time she's in the UK.

If she doesn't have a UK bank account, then Western Union is best for small amounts, or bank transfer if it's more than a couple hundred pounds.

Express International Moneymover High value amounts, high cost, 2 to 3 days.

Economy International Moneymover Low value amounts, lower cost, 5 days.
