How can I transfer money urgently online to an Aussie bank account?

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
Hi

I hope someone can help. My stepdaughter urgently needs some money but she lives in Australia. Normally I send her cash in the post for gifts (very risky indeed but never gone missing yet) but I know there must be a way to transfer it from my bank to hers, but what is the quickest and most economical way, would I be better using a broker and does that get put into an account at the other end? I haven't done this before so could use some advice. I will probably be sending about £100?

I need to do this tonight so she can access it tomorrow, so I really hope someone knows!!:o

Thanks in anticipation....

Western Union. It will cost you, but she can collect it from an appropriate location within ten minutes.

  • Thank you Donnie, I have just looked through your link and found a local agent in her area! Thanks for this, if it all goes smoothly, this would give me peace of mind for future transfers!

    Kindest Regards

  • Hi

Are you able to do this through online banking or do you use telephone banking? The reason I ask is that LLoyds wanted to charge me £20 for a International Money Mover that would happen within 1-3 days with telephone banking (I expect it would take 3 days, not that I'm cynical or anything....). I was awful and said to the advisor that I would want it hand delivered on a silver platter for that charge, considering Western Union were only charging about £12 - £15 for an instant transfer that she could pick up in 10 minutes from a local agent!

We may need to help her out in future so I would appreciate knowing how you go about it?

    Thanks
    Lily

LLoyds are not capable of doing international tfrs online...

Why be nasty to the advisor - they were only telling u the cost and timescales, they didnt set it themselves - if i were them i would have 'politely' and in no uncertain terms told you to use the scammers paradise.

In any case, I don't think the information you receive was correct.

I think it would take closer to five days; http://www.lloydstsb.com/travel/international_payment_services.asp

Best way, if it is a regular occurance, is to open a Nationwide Flexaccount and then send her the cash card. Top it up when you are ready. No charges incurred.
  • I use Bank of Scotland (Halifax) no charge for transferring to my daughter's HSBC account online and she gets the money from her bank around 3 days later..I know this is not suitable for an emergency but If you know in advance.

But in that link it says 2-3 days.

The fastest and cheapest way of getting money to her would be if she had a cash card for a UK bank/savings account. You pay cash in at a branch and she can withdraw it from an ATM within a couple minutes for a fee of a pound or two. It's probably worth setting this up next time she's in the UK.

If she doesn't have a UK bank account, then Western Union is best for small amounts, or bank transfer if it's more than a couple hundred pounds.

Banks tend to offer for instant(ish) payments (although in different terminology)

CHAPS payments - 1-2 days (up to £30)
    BACS payments - 4-5 days (£15)

Either way, they are a rip-off. My bank (Lloyds) fails to cover itself in glory for any of the above services.

All the information above is correct -

    Urgent payment - Western Union
Possible future payments - Set up an 'emergency fund', separate Nationwide account, or even an 'emergency' credit card, it's all in the above. Backpackers / gap year students don't tend to make this type of emergency preparation, so often parents should..!
