Yes it was. The recent speculation on this thread is "which account was Martin talking about, likely to be announced on Thursday this week, in his e-mail?"

The answer is not the Co-op, as was speculated by jburnhams, but the A&L account.

Ah ok, just didnt get the 'little lower down the page' comment.
Have asked a question about the account on that thread as unsure if I can apply as I'm an old customer...

Re the section: If you’ve already got an Alliance & Leicester bank account.

In contrast to Martin's statement that you should ignore the A&L lines in the table, I did the following. I went into the A&L and asked them would they match the 0% overdraft that they give to new customers (I told them I didn't mind about the £100 for switching). I don't really need it, it is just that sometimes I go close to zero balance if I cannot get online to shift money from a saver account to my current account.

After a five minute discussion with the bank manager, the cashier returned to say that they would not overdraft match the offer for new customers for existing customers. At which point I told them I would close my online esaver (it's July - so no interest lost if a withdrawal is made), and I would be shifting my ISA and moving my current account elsewhere. The cashier replied "So what? That has nothing to do with our branch." Not only does it seem they prefer new customers to existing ones, they don't actually care if they lose existing customers, so they can say goodbye to my money. I am going through the closure of all my accounts with them, and I will rejoin them next time they run the £100 join us offer, and then leave a week after they have paid the bonus.
  • We applied in January to change our joint account to Alliance & Leicester from Abbey to get 0% overdraft for 12 months. Idea to try and help get debts in control. July now and despite Abbey denying they are not trying to be difficult (!) the transfer of accounts has not happened and there is little point in continuing as the 12 months interest free started January and the clock is ticking.

My partner is also being made redundant now so there may not be a regular wage going in - again, we won't benefit even if the transfer happens - because we're not paying in £1000 minimum per month.

Seems like we're running fast just to stay still!

Interesting. We had huge problems transfering from Abbey to Halifax. We believed the problem to be Halifax's, but now I'm not too sure...
