Go for Nationwide Regular Saver and you can save up to £500/mth and get 5% - as good as First Direct but you can can save more each month with N/W. Go for N/W Flexaccount - no monthly charges and as a loyal customer I get free travel insurance too! It pays to stay with the mutuals.

I already get the free travel insurance from my FlexAccount but I've revised what I was going to do. I'm thinking of opening a quick FlexDirect alongside it since I'm already with Nationwide, and opening a Nationwide Regular Saver. Then switching my FlexAccount to Yorkshire Bank to get their £250 switch bonus.

Do you still get the insurance on a FlexDirect?

Edit: Never mind, the travel insurance is only for loyal customers. That's a pain.

I think you need to (re)familiarise* yourself with your building society's current product offerings. What (currently) works for you won't work for others.

    * Not doing so could even see you lose the free EU/UK travel insurance perk.

Nationwide is only £250 per month now compared with £300 at First Direct

So I have been a Loyal member for 20 years and am looking for somewhere to save say £20k. Exactly which Nationwide account makes it pay for me to 'stay with a mutual'? (I've had my 5% FlexDirect account, so I can't even make use of that for the first £2500 of my £20k)

The travel insurance perk for existing Flex Account holders is a good one, but they are making it harder to keep it, and almost certainly it won't be around for ever. I'd follow YorkshireBoy's advice very carefully. :)

  • Switched to Nationwide last month. First direct debit to mobile company failed. Eventually managed to speak to someone (after 45 minute wait on phone). Nationwide are aware customers can't get through on phone lines and they apologise for this. Failed direct debit is not their issue though, so switch guarantee is not worth the paper it's printed on. I'll be returning to Santander, who I could speak to, and who paid my bills on time.

At max 250 per month thats £80.00 interest In a year
I am interested in the travel insurance but found: quote "FlexAccount Travel Insurance is only available to existing FlexAccount customers who applied for their FlexAccount before 15 December 2016" is that correct or am I looking in the wrong place?

You are correct. It is a historical benefit not available to new customers and being withdrawn from existing customers who don't keep a close eye on the T&C's, or who make a one-off mistake. :(

  • Anyone with knowledge/experience of the M&S account? I signed up to their £125 gift-card switch deal on October 20th. Had an email the following day to ask me to call them to discuss it which I did but have heard nothing since - not even an email confirming my application. Seems very slow and not not very encouraging. A reason to be alarmed?

I opened a joint account online and received an acknowledgement by email that the application had been successful. Once we had received the debit cards and security token PASS I phoned up and initiated the switch. This was completed on the agreed date with no issues. We are now waiting for the Gift Card to arrive. the individuals at M&S who I've spoken to on the phone and by email have all been very efficient. I would suggest that you phone them if you haven't heard anything about your application.
  • Just wondering if anyone can help me I opened a nationwide flex direct account 3 months ago my partner already banks with them and we did recommend a friend to get £100 each my account is up and running with no problems but we haven't received the £100 I have called the bank about 4 times and have been in branch twice now and all they say is we will look into it I replied to the email they sent and put the code in but still nothing.
