A great number of peoples problems with broadband of greater than 2mbps can be traced to poor internal wiring.
As a previous poster suggested try removing the face plate from your BT master socket and plug your router into the test socket. This will give you a better idea of what your line is capable of.
If you are on a BT ADSL Max service (i.e. not LLU) then its a good idea to leave your router switched on.

Extension wiring causes a lot of problems that can be solved by removing so unnecessary wires and just leaving pins 2 and 5 connected as per this article.

No one ever gets 8mbps on an up to 8mbps service its not technically possible.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

    Thanks guys and gals.

I realise I won't get exactly 8 mbps but anything over 1mbps would be nice.

I will try the thinkbroadband forum.

It just so soul destroying having to go through their blo*dy trouble shooting procedures again and still getting no improvement.

    Thanks again
  • Post your line stats - http://www.dslzoneuk.net/adsl_line_stats.php upstream/downstream attenuation, snr margin, data rate .
Use the test socket behind master.
Also do the bt speed test to get your data rate and ip profile http://speedtester.bt.com/ .

    Thanks in advance gorblimeyguvnor

Here you go - it's all Greek to me. Yes it's connected to the test socket. The speedtester wants my login name - what the blazing do I put? I entered the madasasifsh username but the computer said no. However, MAdasafish says my speed is currently 0.87mbps.

  • Ok, that looks not too bad, reckon a 3500 kbps profile from those figures is possible. The login is just the details you enter in your router to connect ie your maaf username password. Until you get that you still don't know if its your problem with say low sync speeds lowering the profile or just congestion on the line. If your profile says 3500 kbps and you still get low speeds then it's possibly congestion, throttling.
As isofa suggested the thinkbroadband madasafish forum would be a good place to get results - there seems to be maaf staff answering queries on there. Just post all your stats as above along with your problem and see what happens.

I don't think Madasafish do any 'throttling'. Madasafish maintain a thread on this forum, within Internet Access. Samara is very helpful.
Madasafish are at the mercy of BT. BT limited my speed at the exchange, so I had to change my provider.
  • I suppose any ISP that resells BTs product could be said to be at their mercy but considering BT own Madasafish I wouldn't think that applies in this case.

  • I ended up in the same boat when trying to change from orange to sky, they promised me speeds up to 8mb for only £9.99 per month, the same price as sky, "ok I'll stay" says I, after 3 days my connection was still 2mb, I phoned to complain and was told my line could only get 2mb, and that because I had changed package I'd agreed to a new 12 month contract, the fact that my line could only get 2mb was my own fault as I should have checked this before upgrading, what pi**ed me off was that sky offer 2mb free with my sky package, thanks Orange!
