MSE News: Credit and debit card charges banned from Saturday - what you need to know

Is it correct that a business has the right to set a maximum limit on the amount it is willing to accept from a customer when they are paying with a credit card?
And that same rule can be applied to a business credit card payment also?0 -
Yes. .0

I see this as the same issue as the Ringgo one discussed at posts #39 and #42 above, i.e. MiPermit is effectively acting as an agent in the same way that, say, a travel agent might charge a different price for booking a hotel from what you'd pay by going direct, so IMHO the fact that it's ultimately the same parking space doesn't oblige MiPermit to charge the same as the council for it. The fact that they only allow payment by card is essentially incidental as far as compliance with the new regulations is concerned....
I can see what everybody is saying on this one, it just seems to be an unfair loophole for parking services to do this; the ticket machines in the car park have card slots that have, since the day of installation, had stickers over them stating they're not in use. It's a car park that is often used by out of town visitors who don't necessarily know in advance what the charges are likely to be but it is massively cheaper than the multi story across the road... which in my mind makes it more dishonest, particularly for a local authority, to shift the responsibility to a third party in order to insulate themselves in this manner.
That said, I suspect this is one of the many EU-related laws that could be thrown on the "bonfire" in coming years anyway so probably not worth writing to my anti-EU MP to complain.0 -

Unfortunately I think you might be wrong. The government will be too scared to repeal anything that could be seen as "consumer friendly" (even though this is not) or "protecting worker rights". And as noted by glider3560, the government was only too pleased with themselves for gold plating this one.
Incidentally, all that fuss about the plan to scrap 1p and 2p coins - the real gist of the idea is to bear down on cash transactions so big brother can keep an eye on things. The government really doesn't like cash transactions.
I'm afraid your bonfire will be like the promised bonfire of the quangos - a damp squib. But no doubt we can have a consultation about it!0 -
A business I am looking to purchase an item from has advised there is an "Admin Fee" for this, regardless of payment.
Whilst I know they can do this, my question is - They are applying the admin fee to this "One product" only. They will be selling other products throughout the year.
Is this legal under the new legislation?0 -
Yes, don't worry, it's fine.0

Can you get the product elsewhere?
Have you tried a dummy booking with another product?
If they charge the same admin fee regardless of method of payment you will not have anywhere to go with us other than threaten to take your business away.0
