Swindon or Colchester?

Yes, avoid all the 'Ps' - except Peatmoor, which has some very nice parts.
Also avoid Walcot, although confusingly Old Walcot (also known as Walcot West) is a desirable area. I have a lovely four-bed semi for sale there.
I'd add Liden to the list of places to avoid in Swindon, although Lawn is nice and Old Town (bits of it - the southern side of Bath Road rather than the Eastcott Hill area which is called 'Old Town' by the local estate agents to hide the rough bits
) and Kingshill (again in parts). Witchelstowe is the new development down by the M4 but it has something of a reputation, personally I'd avoid that for the moment mainly because of the amount of development going on down there. Bits of west Swindon are ok, but not Grange Park or Toothill, or so I've been told. 0 -
Try Wootton Bassett, quite near swindon, just off the motorway and small village feel to it.Non me fac calcitrare tuum culi0

My son is at uni in Colchester, there are nice shops and tons of restaurants; however there seems to be a recurring problem with beggars coming up and hassling you in the evening. DH and I walk the short distance of from the fenwicks to the Taco Bell and got accosted 5 times by different beggars coming up asking for money. I found it really intimidating.0

Won't they move out/go off to university in a few years anyway?I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll

Personally having lived the other side of London but being SW based I would go Swindon. I think in terms of access it is in such a better place.
Easy / Easier Access to
South coast
Devon
Cornwall
New Forrest
Wales (forrest of Dean).
Good rail links
M4 / M5
London is about an hour.
If you are now in Devon it's easier to return.0
