What should I use to fill in screw holes in my skirting board?

I was going to pollyfilla them, but upon searching google I have found 2958235 contradicting bits of advice.

I'll slap some dulux satinwood paint on afterwards I expect. Any ideas?

  • I would use a good two part wood filler, sand and spot prime (assuming you’ve got preprimed skirting) then undercoat and paint as normal.

Yeah I'd second the 2 part fillers because they set solid unlike the pva/acrylic types which can dry and shrink.

wilko seems to only sell pre-mixed would that work?

what do you mean by spot priming, the skirting board is already white and pre-primed - after I fill the hole and sand them do I just dab something on?

Two part filler is ideal, avoid the ready mixed. Wickes own brand is as good as the rest.

    Just sand it and paint.

If you're painting them then decorators caulk was invented for this very reason. Forget 2 part filler and all that fancy stuff, a £1 tube of decorators caulk is all you need.

    Caulk? If you say so.

I used ronseal multi purpose wood filler, which has worked fine for me, coat of leyland primer undercoat and then top coat - job done :)

You have other good answers but I'll add this one. In the past, I have used wooden plugs. You basically drill a shallow larger hole the size of the wooden plug then drill your screw hole and screw in. Then you glue the wooden plug in and use a chissel to cut the top of the plug off. You can buy plug cutters for a drill. Probably not worth the effort if you are painting afterwards but for wood you are leaving unpainted it is a neat solution.

In my experience filler can grin through the top coat of paint but if you're giving it a coat of primer/undercoat first or something that is self-undercoating it should be fine.

All of my pre-primed skirting was finished with a coat of Leyland acrylic primer undercoat and two coats of Little Greene eggshell.
