There's no 'catch', but perhaps your young family members should have explained how it works. WhatsApp uses the internet for calls and messages, unlike normal voice calls and texts through the mobile network itself.

Your phone can connect to the internet and enable use of WhatsApp either through its mobile data connection, which is relatively very cheap on Three PAYG at 1p/MB without buying a bundle, or through WiFi, such as your home WiFi if you have (?).

    Thanks thats quite clear.
Yes i have sky wifi at home so can use that for free text/calls.

I agree. I've been using WhatsApp on 3 payg for quite a while now and have found data charges to be minimal when out and about (and obviously zero when using wifi at home or in cafe's etc with decent free WiFi).

Just make sure that you only use voice connection when using data as video calls will dramatically increase the data charges.

    Ok thanks as well
  • Why does she want a touchscreen phone.
Wouldn't you be better just replacing her old phone with a like for like phone that she can use, I can't imagine her using apps.
This is a typical answer that annoys me.
First, why shouldn't a 70 yr old want a smart phone?
Second, why shouldn't a 70 yr old use apps.
You've just upset and annoyed millions of people in this age group and consigned us to and easy chair in the corner of the room to just watch daytime TV.
More people in this age group are still working in highly technical jobs being paid more than youngsters who have a 1st class degree.
Myself, I'm almost 70, and I teach these youngsters from Uni how to code, create apps and so on, because they just don't have a clue how to do it!
