Halifax, Lloyds and BOS closing my accounts

  • If you haven't already reconsidered I would. My accounts were closed similarly last year - it seems Lloyds are inept or can't be bothered to do a bit of extra work and actually identify p2p transactions as nothing out of the ordinary. They'd rather just take the lazy approach and lose the customer. It will be interesting to see what level of customer loss makes someone there wake up and smell the coffee.

The fear of massive fines for not 'knowing their customers' or for tipping off by making you suspicious probably makes it cheaper to lose some accounts.
  • Same thing happened with me today, I am shocked. I was in a shoping making payment of £10. My card kept on getting declined. I checked my account and I did had money, I thought may be an issue with Halifax then I took my lloyds account and it had same issue. I was shocked. Then I checked my phone and there were Three text messges from HALIFAX, LLOYDS & BOS all stating exactly same contact that my account was reviewed and they are closing my account in 60 days and all services has been withdrawn.
I called bank and they said that there is a block on my account but account is still active and I have to call a review team but they are closed now, I was given a reference number and a contact number. Halifax was my main account from last 5-6 years and I have no other account left and my salary goes in this account and I am due to get paid in 2 days. I am stuck I don't know what to do.

Get yourself a new account with a different banking group as a priority, while waiting to speak to the review team.

Having accounts in three different places is generally a good idea but, as you've found, spreading your money across multiple banks doesn't really offer any resilience if they're all part of the same group....
  • What is your account history?

    1. Are you british national?
    2. Any Cash put into the account?
    3. Any Large transaction came or went out from account?
    4. Any international Transfer done recently?

Just to add my experience, I've just had this dreaded letter too.  I had previously received a "Know Your Customer" letter asking me to call the branch as i hadn't answered their call (they never rang as far as I'm aware). I rang 3 days after receiving the letter and spoke to my Branch manager, who was very nice and said everything was fine, basically.
Today, I've received the "we're closing everything" letter!  It was actually sent before I had the conversation with my branch manager however, so I'm hoping it's going to be resolved.
Incidentally, They had also put a lock on my accounts prior to this. When I called to resolve this, I was passed from pillar to post, they thought it was some kind of bug and eventually unlocked everything for me without ever mentioning any of this at all! - bit poor.
In terms of what triggered it, like many others I have multiple accounts (playing the interest game of old), and also I do/did a lot of P2P investing.  They seem unable to cope with the concept of reasonable sums going in and out most days. I'm not a money launderer, I invest my money)
It seems very poor practice to me to close an account in good standing for 25 years with no discussion whatsoever. I hope it's resolved. Of course, I now can't get through to discuss this further with them due to people understandably having bigger problems with the coronavirus.

edit: If I had to, I could live with the closures - but would this affect my Halifax sharedealing account? That would be much more of a problem, especially in these very volatile times!

  • Happy ending to my story, after an in-branch appeal and writing a letter my closures were overturned. Thank god, what a worry at the worst possible time.
