Beware double glazing companies!

Lesson learnt here - don't fall for the "price good for today" rubbish....

Got someone from Dunraven Windows around for quote for front door porch. £6300 inc 12 months interest free credit. Signed up anyway because they did a 14 day cancellation.

Thought it was a bit steep. They'd been telling me the new front door was costing £2000 so alarm bells started ringing when I found on B+Q/Wickes website that this is very expensive for a door.

So I got a local windows company in. No sales pitch, no messing - £1300.

MASSIVE difference. No interest free credit but hey ho that would be a massive APR if I went that route.

Needless to say cancelled the original order.

Appreciate that companies position themselves where they see fit in the market but this is blatant rip-off. How do they reps sleep at night knowing they've marked the price up by £4-£5k?

Saying that had one guy turn up (Safestyle windows), take one look and say sorry can't do that. Obviously, not enough profit in it for him!

Double-glazing companies are notorious for such practices; they invariably start high and go as low as necessary.

My parents starting price was 28k; after a couple of hours it was 6.5k. I couldn't tolerate such time-wasting, but apparently plenty do.
  • My parents phoned Anglian (without my knowledge) and they quoted £5k for a composite front door (with stained glass effect) in a Upvc frame with a Upvc sidelight. I run a Joinery and have basic knowledge of Upvc so phoned a small local company and they did the job for £1800. Now even after the usual marketing spin ,Anglian managed to get their quote down to £3,400 but even that was a rip off and I don't know how these salesmen/women can sleep at night.

My parents could have signed up with the first quote of £5k if they hadn't been savy (ish). I could never do this to my clients and often suggest getting other quotes, the reason being I know I'm competitive.

There is an obvious answer to this practice.
When they come calling ,you have to make it quite clear that you want "one price and one price only".
I feel that this would seriously concentrate the mind of potential salesmen, if they knew that they are only going to get one chance to give a price.
They would also know that the price they quote will be compared with other "one chance" quotes.
There would be no going back to their manager or offering any so called " special discount, if you sign up today".

Worth a try but you've got to remember they've heard all this before and are specially trained to act like this.

To be honest, I signed up knowing I could cancel. Which I did.

Had about 30 missed calls in next few days and messages asking me to ring them.

No consumer, anywhere within the universe, should have anything to do with Dunraven.

Tis a good job you cancelled your order!
  • We had our side door replaced last year and this year our front door replaced and bi folding doors are being done next week. Both by local companies,. both brilliant, came around measured up, left a brochure with all the options then left with no pressure or price on the day, then they emailed through the quote a few days later. Only phone calls we've ever had from them was to comfirm the appointment time and an installation date.

We also requested a price for replacing some french doors but said we probably wont do that till the summer,. they happily provided a separate quote and have never chased us up on them.

Called out Thomas Sanderson for a quote for 1 set of shutters for a bay window back in October and found the whole experience really odd, constant phone calls even after we had booked our appointment,

When he arrived he spent the first 20mins telling us all about his sick mother then asked us to leave the room while he measured up and 'run some numbers'. After 5mins called us in to (our own) dinning room and asked us to take a seat (on our own chairs) then gave us a quote which was more than we are paying for our bi-folding doors,..

After we got up off the floor and sat back down he then said he could 'remove the furniture from the quote' not having a clue what furniture has to do with a shutter he showed us the stylish garden furniture that we would also receive (which obviously we'd actually be paying for),... we then got the whole 'only valid for a couple of days' waffle,

Have absolutely zero time for companies like that,
