Missed connection

Can anyone help , back in October our flight to Orlando via Philadelphia was delayed due to the late arrival of plane causing us to miss the connection in Philadelphia and meaning a 5 hour delay we had 7 in our party including 3children ,first of all we were offered nothing in the way of refreshment and no explanation . On returning home we contacted American Airlines via email and they informed us that indeed under EU rules we could receive compensation of 600 euros each and sent us all forms to fill in with bank details which we returned and waited for money to arrive , after a few weeks and no money and no explanation we again contacted AA to be told after a review we were now not entitled to compensation just wondered what should be the next coarse of action replies appreciated and can they do this .
