ebay newbie seller tips

I used to sell lots on ebay but haven't sold on it for years.

My selling account is down to 0% feedback as it only counts the last 12 months so I am starting from scratch.

Please can you recommend what settings I need to change. I want to stop international bidders and any others settings I should be changing.

I understand I get 20 free listings per month and 20 free schedule listings per month, is that a total of 20 mixed or 40 total?

Thanks

As a new seller you might be limited to fewer listings until you get established. It is not uncommon to be given limits like '6 listings or £300, which ever comes first'.

There is also a glitch affecting some people , it affects both my main business account and main private account that means it is impossible to block Russia. In fact there are lots of nasty little glitches, so set your buyer requirements as tight as you want, but if something does go wrong don't be afraid to phone eBay and argue with them.

Other changes include the fact that FVFs are now payable on the total payment , including postage charged to the buyer.

I am hoping this won't apply as I am using my previous account which has lots of sales on, just not used in a few years.

If you suddenly start selling expensive items then expect a review.

Start slow and build up, dont instantly jump in with expensive items. Never guaranteed but that may help avoid restrictions.

    Doesnt apply to you but.
Old accounts with good feedback are a target for scammers, if an account has not been used for years maybe the owner has lost their email or given up on ebay. So a few password attemps/resets may not be noticed.

But in a similar way their system picks up unusual behaviour, like little activity and then selling high value or high risk items.

My top tip (apart from reading the stickies on this board) is to ensure your paypal email is correctly written in the listing on eBay.

You will probably be treated as a new seller but with an older history you might find you have generous selling limits. You will however almost certainly have the 21day hold on payments for a while, but the sooner you start selling and start building up some nice sales the quicker you will go back to being just a normal seller.

Have you set up as a seller properly yet , made sure your cards and fee payment method etc up to date? Once you've done that you should see some information somewhere (it varies depending on what view you are set up on) but with one of my newer accounts it shows me my limits for selling and other details about my free listings etc on my expanded seller dashboard.

    Thanks everyone.

I will be super busy at work this month so not starting my selling until February as can't be doing with the questions/trips to the PO at the moment, just want to get my account ready to go. Anything I buy this month will be on that account to hopefully build up a bit of recent feedback.

I might try the frees listings to schedule to end in February. I remember from last time to weight everything before deciding my post charge.

With the free listings you get are these still 99p start only?

I'm not worried about the hold on payments I am only selling cheap items to clear some clutter. Anything I get is a bonus. 10 year old has some stuff to sell as well, it will be lesson for him how hard it is to make money. He will have to pay his own commission and come with me to the PO to post his stuff.

No set up payments yet, thanks for the reminder thats something I need to sort.

feedback for buying makes no difference to how you are viewed by ebay as a seller, you can have hundreds of buying feedback and still be considered a new seller. It is also not a good diea to buy and sell on the same account as it can cause issues if you annoy a seller at all.

Do have a good read of the terms and conditions of everything before you list, the free listings, assuming you are eligible, are for any start price , with the downturn in online sales generally it isbest to avoid low starts unless you can afford to lose money (don't forget fees are still payable for both ebay and paypal).

To start building up your selling limit it might well be wise to start listing ASAP, the longer you leave it the longer it will be before you get decent limits. Maybe a few odds and ends that can be dropped easily as the PO without much wrapping effort?

Have a read of the sticky postage thread ,keep your proof of posting for at least 6 months, and if selling collection only items read the sticky on that as well- and perhaps consider using Shpock instead.

Don`t sell on Ebay full stop.

If you want to post more then ten items then expect a payment in your inbox, obviously the more you post and the more you relist the more it`s going to be.

The people are weird and rude, the other week I had a message from a Ebay rule lover threatening to report me, going over and over the rules of Ebay like I had no idea . But you have to expect this now on Ebay, it`s full of schemers, scammers and the likes, most of the time you do get a pleasant transaction but do expect this.

If a case does go wrong however and a item is being returned or wasn`t described, don`t expect it to go your way because Ebay always sides with the buyer. I find theirs two types of buyers...The weird and the normal. I see a previous poster mention if you sell something expensive or valuable expect a review, well i`ve sold a faulty Iphone 6+ phone and a Thomas Sabo necklace and have had no reviews. The phone buyer messaged me to say can I send it it ASAP, in a box, can you tell me when you`ve sent it, make sure you send it off first class etc Yeah ok like i`m gonna send it as it is on it`s own with no packaging.

I can`t make your mind up for you, but it`s your choice if you want to go ahead and try Ebay.
