Just found this out from Thomas Cook:
From 1 January 2018, you’ll need to pay an Overnight Stay Tax which has been introduced by the Greek Ministry of Tourism and aims to enhance the State’s revenue in the context of the current fiscal adjustment programme. This will be collected from you when you get to your accommodation.
The tax works out between 0.50 - 4 Euros per night per person. The amount you’ll pay will depend on the official rating of your accommodation.

At least it's collected as you arrive and not as you leave like in Rome but it will put a dampner on Greek holidays as they wont be as cheap:T:T  :beer::beer: to the lil one

City tax is prevalent in a lot of European cities, it's not always advertised... This sounds, like a very similar tax.
A lot of the time (in France, Italy etc.) I've found that hotels won't bother to collect the city tax. Either they pay it out of the room rate, or "the guest didn't show".0 -
The subject came up in another thread a few months ago when this additional tax was announced.....I'll find it in the morning and add it to this thread.0

I bet 5 star are €4. That’s nearly €60 on a two week holiday per person.
Great guess where I’m going in 2018....0 -
Here's the thread I started:

From the 1st January 2018 a new Overnight Stay Tax will be introduced by the Government of Greece. This will be payable locally by the individual tourist on checking in to accommodation in Greece and varies according to the official rating of the accommodation as follows:
Apartments (all categories): 0.50 Euros per room per night
Hotels:
1-2 star: 0.50 Cents per room per night
3 star: 1.50 Euros per room per night
4 star: 3.00 Euros per room per night
5 star: 4.00 Euros per room per night
Payment can be made by cash or card.0 -
Payment can be avoided by removing Greece from your travel plans and damaging the Greek economy further.
(They should try improving tax collection rates from their own citizens).0 -

For us, the 7 euro saving (we stay in apartments, so 50 cents per day for us) would be cutting our nose off to spite our face.
We love Greece, we'll just have one half carafe of wine less per holiday. :rotfl:0 -
I'll just pay mine to the lovely Maria (or her son) at the same time we pay for the safe deposit box.
And not give it another thought.0
