For those people booking for Greece, the following may be of interest (this came from the company we booked our 2018 package with):
Please note:
From the 1st January 2018 a new Overnight Stay Tax will be introduced by the Government of Greece. This will be payable locally by the individual tourist on checking in to accommodation in Greece and varies according to the official rating of the accommodation as follows:
Apartments (all categories): 0.50 Euros per room per night
Hotels:
1-2 star: 0.50 Cents per room per night
3 star: 1.50 Euros per room per night
4 star: 3.00 Euros per room per night
5 star: 4.00 Euros per room per night
Payment can be made by cash or card.

Whoops!
Meant to post this on the Overseas board.
I've redone it and asked the board guide to delete this one.0 -

Looks like they have seen how much the Balearics have made from the 'Tourist' tax, and thought. Good idea.0

It affects Greek Tourists too, so it's a tax on the property rather than foreign tourists. Not the only tax you have to pay either, but unless you get a full breakdown of the hotel bill you're probably unaware of it.
I think this current new tax was announced last year. There's plenty on the various Greece forums on Trip Advisor.
All that said, these taxes apply in one guise or another in most countries.0 -
I was warned of this (apologetically) by my usual hotel when I booked recently. A bit surprised that they were rated 4 star (whatever this really means) not because its not nice but its not 'luxury'0

Greek star ratings are not based upon how nice they are but on Quality. By that it is meant what levels of service or facilities are provided such as catering availability, 24 hour reception, swimming pool, bar, ensuite facilities etc. Really they have nothing to do with the standard of those things provided so that can be quite variable.
Have stayed in dire four star accommodation that was poor value for money and excellent low star places. Usually the ratings in Greece are alphabetic and I think it is a star rating by conversion to what the UK customer is more used to.0 -
