I don't think you need insurance to tax a car. That isn't practical as it can take a week or more after buying insurance for the MID database to show your car as being insured. If the DVLA tax site checked MID before letting you tax your car then people would be waiting around a week or more before being able to tax and move their newly-aquired car.

But as soon as it’s taxed you need insurance.

Are you telling me you're completely unaware of a check that has been in place for almost half a century?

If the vehicle is re-licensed at a Post Office, you are not required to produce the insurance certificate/cover note, except in Northern Ireland.

When I bought a car last year I took out 2 days temporary insurance on it. I then taxed it about 5 minutes later. I would be amazed to find out that MID was updated that quickly.

When I bought my current car a month ago I taxed it two days before collecting and insuring it.

If DVLA did indeed check MID, then presumably the car would have been shown as insured under the dealer's trade policy.

Any such check (whether online or by examining the cover note)
is rather pointless, as it only verifies the car is insured for one day out of 365.
