Are you allowed to ask the cashier to prove it is fake?
You are certainly allowed to ask the cashier for a receipt for any retained notes, and of course that would seem to be a sensible thing to do.

I took one in the takings one day and the bank spotted it straight away. I was given a receipt for it but never reimbursed, so that's 20quid I never saw again.

I too an a bit surprised a bank swapped a fake for a real note.

He was a stranger (at the time but kept in contact since) and yes I actually saw him withdraw the money, I looked away while he typed in his PIN, then saw him select £150, watched the cash get dispensed, and he handed it to me to count before he even counted it himself. There was no possible way for him to have slipped three fake notes in the middle, and remove the real ones. I noticed they were fake straight away as I work in retail so deal with £1000s of notes on a daily basis.

That's fair enough then - which begs the question why doesn't the bank adopt the same security to weed out fake notes when filling ATMs that the retailers/banks do when being handed notes?

Not really, z1a is a long term member and fairly prolific poster. I wonder whether drink had been taken...
  • This is precisely why I despise £20 notes with a passion. Always try my best to get rid of them wherever possible.

They would need to send the notes to be scrapped and would lose out on that money.

While it's certainly true that Banks would have to make good any shortfall caused by fake notes, it's very unlikely that money in ATMs won't have been checked at some stage while in the bank's possession. How thoroughly checked is another matter...

There has certainly been a poster on this forum who works at a bank and was responsible for filling ATMs, as I recall a thread from a while ago mentioning it. Hopefully they are reading this and will put their head above the parapit....

They may have something to contribute, depending on what their responsibility is, but most ATMs are replenished with pre-filled cartridges so branch staff wouldn't get to see the notes.

When I worked on the IT systems where ATM cash was ordered (20 years ago) there were some ATMs that could only be filled with brand new notes, although I suspect that doesn't happen so much these days. But even with used notes there should be checks made to spot any fakes before they are sent out to the ATM.
