It can and does happen. My friend received 5 x 20 notes. She went to anearby shop and they said the one she gave them was a fake, they kept it and my friend went straight back to the bank within 10 moinutes of her getting the money out. She wasnt given the money straightaway, there was an investigation ie atm camera, all five notes were fake
Shop keeper but she was eventually reimbursed.
And please dont insult people by saying 'i find it hard to believe,' you are in effect calling them a liar and that is not only insulting, it's downright rude

    My thoughts exactly. Thank you.

It really can and does happen, I’ve posted about it before, I was with someone withdrawing cash (I gave him a lift to the ATM, which was a proper bank one in the wall of the branch but after closing time). The money was for the donation of my foster dog that he was adopting, he withdrew the full amount and in the middle of the bundle were three fake £20 notes.

I would really hope someone fostering a dog wouldn't be so low as to try to fob off fake 20s....but the cynic in me has to ask.

Was this a friend or a stranger? Did you actually see him withdraw the money? You can see where I'm going....

He wasn’t the one fostering, I was, he was the person adopting the dog. Part of my role as a fosterer is to accept the donation on behalf of the charity when the dog gets adopted. Neither of us was trying to fob off fake 20s.

He was a stranger (at the time but kept in contact since) and yes I actually saw him withdraw the money, I looked away while he typed in his PIN, then saw him select £150, watched the cash get dispensed, and he handed it to me to count before he even counted it himself. There was no possible way for him to have slipped three fake notes in the middle, and remove the real ones. I noticed they were fake straight away as I work in retail so deal with £1000s of notes on a daily basis.

As an aside, I generally try and use a credit card; it avoids cash issues...

I said "I find it hard to believe" not I DON'T believe, - that would be calling them a liar.
I also find your story hard to believe as well!

It might be hard for me to believe it if it didn't happen to many other people as well but it does seem to be a fairly regular occurrence:

But how does the person know that the 'fake' note they handed over is actually fake not just the cashier on the fiddle (not saying this is what happened in this situation but it could).

Are you allowed to ask the cashier to prove it is fake?

The probably have a device for checking notes. We had these in our office and were required to check any notes we were offered in payment.

You can buy yourself one http://www.staples.co.uk/counterfeit-banknote-detector-pen/cbs/297633032.html
