New gas connection - Usage
Options
Hello all, I have had a new gas installation into my home with a new gas central heating system. I have just checked my meter and note usage of 2382kw if my maths is correct. 60 units on a metric meter over 9 days in the house most of the time. This seems a lot. I have no idea if a new installation required extra gas usage during testing etc but am interested in views and learning more.
Live in a 3 bed semi with new boiler which provides for 8 radiators and hot water. 2 adults and 2 children. Meter is a reconditioned dial metric meter.

Not too bad this time of year for 9 days, i used 48 units in the last week home all the time.0 -
lol, I am clearly working it out wrong, feel like a doughnut. Happier with that, new boiler so was hoping for ok usage! Thanks.0

Everybody's home is different, every ones lifestyle is different and everyone has a different idea of what's hot, cold or comfortable. Likewise the weather changes on a daily basis so it's a bit of an "how long is a piece of string" question.
Your maths aren't correct, 60metric units is around 660kwh which works out at an average of about 73kwh/day. I dunno how cold it's been where you live but that diosen't sound too bad.
You've got another thread going on trying to work out the best way to set up your heating so until you've got it sorted out and got some of your own records to compare it against then you wont know how the system is performing.
I would be setting up a spreadsheet and reading the gas meter every day (ideally at roughly the same time) to get an idea of the consumption (do you cook and heat water with gas?). Set up some columns for thermostat settings, boiler settings, timer settings and include the outside temperature so you can monitor what your consumption is under different conditions.
Dont forget to only change one thing at a time to see what effect it has and give the system and the house time to adjust to the new settings - at least a couple of days per tweak. If you heat water and cook with gas as well then take that into account or at least record the fact that that's something else that's using it.
Faffing about with the controls every hour to see what happens just confuses you and the heating system, you need to set up a baseline and then adjust one thing at a time to see what effect it has.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -
Thanks Metalodave. Spreadsheets already set up and not one setting has been touched yet other than for comfort so no faffing here. I am instead paying close attention to the many readings my boiler gives and learning as much as I can.
Previously already highlighted my incorrect maths, I would equally benefit from knowing how to work it out.0 -
THis is how to do it when you've got a gas bill handy https://www.npower.com/business/help-and-support/meter-readings/estimating-your-gas-bill/
or use this calculator http://utility-assist.co.uk/calculator
however a rough estimate can be worked out by multiplying the number of cu.m by 11.1Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0
