Unfortunately manufacturers have realised that most people prefer cheap and care less about reliability - if they didn't there would be little market for the tat from Hotpoint, Whirlpool, Beko etc. And the manufacturers (and the retailers) want those people to come back in 3 years and buy a new one - so they are designed with a limited lifetime. You get what you pay for.
For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple and wrong.

Humm, the "British made" product would be unaffordable now. Do you realise how much a far eastern made fridge fridge freezer would cost if it were made now, in the UK? We demand too much in wages, holiday pay, minimum working hours, family tax credits, child tax credits, sickness benefit, etc, etc, etc, the list is endless, to have any hope of competing.
Maybe we just overpriced ourselves . . .
Oddly the Germans ie Miele seem to be able to do it! Then again having just spent £1400 on a tumble dryer you might be right.

...to bring you up to date re this topic.

I contacted the 'supplier' and they agreed that the life expectancy of their freezer 'in their opinion' should have been longer than the 4.5 years that this unit lasted, and offered me £75.00 refund, of which I accepted. The money was transferred with a few days so a satisfactory conclusion was achieved.

all I can say is avoid Hotpoint if you want a fridge/freezer to last . the last 3 I have had have all lasted 3-5 years. the last one a large larder fridge started not keeping the top shelf cool around 18 month old.
have a Zannusi now and very pleased with it

The trouble is the name on the device doesn't tell you who made it where. If you've had three Hotpoints over that period they were probably made by three different companies in three different countries.
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.
