What is the average life expectancy of a Fridge - Freezer...

Good Afternoon,

May I ask what would the average life expectancy of an average Fridge - Freezer be?

I am aware that this question is almost like saying, to some people, what is the average length of a piece of string...

...I have been fortunate in my life to have never had a fridge-freezer break down on me ever, until quite recently but I have replaced the said item after something like 12+ years and have know people to have had one for longer

...but ours failed at just over 4 years at one of the most inconvenient time of year, less than two days before Christmas...

...our main concern is the fact when my wife opened the freezer door the heat that she was met with was far 'too hot to handle' similar to opening the door of an oven with a Sunday roast ready to serve.

We often go away for holidays now with this happening it scares us, being OAPs as to 'what scene would we be met with on our return after this experience'? Could the appliance catch fire?

...your comments would be appreciated.

...kind regards to you...

They don't make them like they used too. Appliances, electrical goods etc now tend to be a hit or miss.

They are now made mostly in the Asian regions with the cheapest winning the contracts, can you expect the quality parts from yesteryear?

We see it all the time now, 4 years is better than some.

My last tumble dryer lasted 6 months, repaired under warranty and then the good weather came and was never used again till the following winter, broke down again and behold the out of warranty was thrown at me.

So your right, how long is a piece of string?

Your experiences are terrible and manufacturers should be ashamed, not a chance I hear you say, they don't give two hoots anymore.

Really sad to believe that the 'British Made' product that we were very proud of in my youth, has turned into this since the seller puts profit before reliability, what did I say 'reliability'?

So I think that if we go away on holiday we are best to empty the said F/F and feel at least safe that it could not catch fire.

    Regards...

Fridge freezers are a lot more complicated than they used to be so they go wrong more. But they still go wrong rarely, mine's been going 10 years & showing no sign of stopping, even though it is a cheap Asian model.
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.

As I said in my post I feel that a little over four years is very unlucky in our view at £300.

I dont go by the big brands of supposed reputation, of lasting a long time, but costing more initially, on white goods. Other Moneysavers have praised their Miele appliances and other European brands, but, while not perhaps the most efficient way to do it, I'd rather have an up to date machine every few years, than the 'best' one, which it may well have been, but 10 years ago.

I'd look at the length of warranty that the makers offer, plus the extended warranty, by remembering to register it after purchase, which is either a way to get your name added to the makers mailing list, or a get out clause, if you forget and it goes wrong outside warranty period,

Plus your credit card or bank account may well give you a further years cover, free, if you are lucky.

Otherwise it;s buy from Ikea with their own brand stuff, for 5 years included, but a very limited range. Made by Hotpoint/Whirlpool I understand.

I'd rather have my Miele which although costs more initially, it's less to run, has longevity and the technical side is better than most even on day one versus those replacements in years to come.

Your "up to date machine every few years" will cost more than my Miele, in cost upfront, running costs and piece of mind. I know I won't open my door on Christmas Eve to find the contents of my fridge ruined.

Humm, the "British made" product would be unaffordable now. Do you realise how much a far eastern made fridge fridge freezer would cost if it were made now, in the UK? We demand too much in wages, holiday pay, minimum working hours, family tax credits, child tax credits, sickness benefit, etc, etc, etc, the list is endless, to have any hope of competing.
Maybe we just overpriced ourselves . . .

Thank you vansboy and theonlywayisup for your input which I value...

...I think that when you are a wage earner, you can be a lot more choosy in the products that you buy in doing your research as you have pointed out,

we are almost in our eighties and have only been in this property just a little over four years, and all of our white goods were renewed to try and avoid transporting these items as they sometimes don't travel well, and as you will be aware when you change dwellings you have a limited budget to spend at that age...

...not that we are pleading poverty, but money is in short supply... ...

Can anyone say what could have happened if we had been away on holiday when this happened as we are now concerned, thank you.

It would be speculation. One would hope that at some point, the fuse would have blown. Or the unit might have caught fire. Basically anything could have happened, ranging from nothing to a fire.
  • I have one built into kitchen which is 7 years old - no problems, and one in garage 18+ years also no problems. Inside is AEG outside is Zanussi.
