    Depends on your employer. The key is to find those who have family friendly policies - such as civil service, and local authorities. The Civil Service in particular offer flexible working hours including compressed hours, homeworking, 5 days of parental leave - no notice required in the case of sick children or an emergency, term time only contracts etc.

    If the OP returns to work, it is likely that a pension scheme will be offered.

    It may be that pension contributions could help retain access to means tested benefits.

    That was the point I was trying to make it depends on the employer, as far as I am aware there is no right to have time off, apart from reasonable time to make alternative arrangements. I appreciate its hard to define reasonable the acas website suggests two days, a childs illness can easily last longer than this.

    Sounds like I need a job in the Civil service.

    While these are available they have to be agreed and will depend on circumstances. You cannot have everybody in an office working term time only.
