Part Time job and Tax credits

Happy New Year everyone! I wonder if anyone could give me some advice please?
Husband and I have 4 children. Twins aged 12, a 7 year old and a 5 year old.
Husband works full time, 45 hours a week and I'm a stay at home mum.
We don't have any family so all childcare is done by just husband and me.
We have some debt that we are paying off which takes up a fair whack of husbands wages each month so I think it's time I got myself a part time job to help out. Husband earns approx £32k.
I can't work during the day as I will need to be around during school holidays, inset days, child sick days etc. But I'm able to work in the evenings and at the weekends.
At the moment we get Child Tax credits, and my question is how many hours would I be able to work, and how much could I earn before it affects the amount we get from Tax Credits?
I'm keen to get back into work to help with the finances but it wouldn't make sense to lose more in tax credits than I would earn.
I hope that makes sense! Thank you in advance for any advice.

    Any earnings will affect tax credits. They’ll reduce by 41p for every £1 earned.

    If you work at least 16hrs per week you could then get help with childcare costs.

    There are also some jobs that are term time only- Teaching Assistant in a school for example if that suits your experience and skill set.
  • Thank you both. I was looking at going into care work. Visiting people in their own homes. Its something I used to do many years ago before I had children and I remember being able to choose my hours to suit. It may well have all changed by now but it's a job I enjoyed and something I could go back to doing during evenings and weekends.
    The problem with TA and the such is if any of my children are poorly and unable to go to school I'd need to take time off.
    I'm just trying to figure out our options at the moment without making ourselves any financially worse off!

    You’d be able to take time off for your kids if you need to. Or your OH can.

    That not quite true there is no right to take time off work to look after poorly children.

    You have the right to time off to make alternative arrangements but that is not the same.

    You have a right to a reasonable time off to deal with an emergency involving a dependant. It doesn’t need to just be to make alternative arrangements as if you have a sick child there’s highly unlikely to be any alternatives other than taking annual leave for example.

    You have a right to take annual leave or parental leave to look after a child but it will be unpaid.

    Do you have a link please where it says that. The only link I could find regarding parental leave is you have to give notice. My workplace does not allow annual leave at short/no notice, I believe the guidelines are for this you have to give as much notice for the leave as the leave you want to take.

    It would be great if I am entitled if my child is ill but as far a I am aware I'm not.

    By rights you’re supposed to give 21 days notice for parental leave and you’re supposed to give notice for annual leave but in an emergency the employer can ask you to take either one. Or the employer could let you take time off paid or unpaid, it’s up to them.
