Having spent a lot of time over the last few months with vegetarians I’m hoping to include a lot more vegetarian food in my diet with the aim of reducing the meat I eat. I’ve realised the health benefits and am ready to start making the changes.

I seemed to have slept walked through the past two years rather aimlessly

Some (a lot )of that is down to ill health

However I now have a diagnosis, it's the cause that's the problem. Many of you know I used to have a serious drink problem, done a detox, done rehab, stayed dry for 12 years, then started drinking again. No where near the levels I was back in the day, but 3 glasses of wine ( read a bottle if we are being totally honest) a night, more on high days and holidays. Never enough to be clearly drunk or to have a hang over, but obviously way too much.

So the cause of my ill health is either my crumbling upper spine meaning my nerves are being trapped ( which is supported by investigations so far) or it's a symptom of prolonged heavy drinking

So I'm biting the bullet and knocking the drink on the head again.

This means I'm going to have long evenings to fill so I'm going to have to look at everything else in my life.

Not sure where I'm going to start, but I think a total de clutter is the first place, drawers, wardrobes, cupboards the lot.

Then I'm going to need friends who aren't drinking buddies. I have one in mind, she swims and walks, and I'm going to make the effort to join her

I'm also going to start to make an effort on myself. There was once a time I'd never leave the house without hair washed and blow dried, a bit of make up, nails tidy etc.

But mostly I'm going to try to make myself get out in the real world more. I really struggle in social settings so have avoided them all my life but I'm really going to have a go at making friends and going places

So they are my plans for the coming year, oh plus becoming fianacilly self sufficient again. Not resolutions as such, just things I need to do pdq before I end up housebound and lonely. I don't want to head into my retirement years with nothing other then the grandchildren to wake up for.

The very best of luck. It is a sensible and brave decision.

I want to get to grips with mindless eating. It is just too easy to think
it is not worth cooking for one and grab a bread roll, or something on toast .Even worse is convenience food which is not really food and laden with salt, sugar, fat and additives. Decided to make sure I have fruit and veg in the house and aim for five a day and limit things like bread, potatoes and pasta. I don't want to feel I am on a diet but more that I am treating my body to real food that gives me nutrients.

I intend to dig out my pedometer and go for a short walk each day and slowly increase my steps. I also want to get started on clearing clutter. My bedroom is full of bits and bobs from Christmas needing to be put away.

My DDs mislaid the sticker on the wheelie bin so I did not know collection dates for the bins this week. A neighbour has just knocked
to say the recycling is today so I have dragged out the bins in my slippers which are now wet.

I have been meaning to finish pinning up and hand sewing the hems of the curtains in my bedroom and living room for a year so want to get that done.

Once I have got things sorted out I want to do a few small hand sewing projects which will also keep my hands busy and away from snacks. Trying to make sure snacks will be things like fruit, veg sticks and a low fat dip or home made soup.

Youngest is staying till Monday and the rest of the family are here tomorrow for lunch and to stay over and see in the New Year with me. Once everyone leaves on Monday I am going to slowly clear things up and get started on sensible small changes.

Have just gone upstairs and changed a double bed and two single beds. I do not have the strength to move round the day bed and the truckle bed so that will have to wait for tomorrow when family are round.

Grocery delivery has arrived early so that is unpacked and I have a home made soup of pork ribs, onions, carrots, leeks, swede and potato on the hob.

Washing machine and tumble drier are on and I was about to go sit in the living room when youngest arrived with her friend  I have retreated to my bedroom with my feet up and with my laptop and will bob through to the kitchen to keep an eye on the soup and the washing machine etc.

  • Good for you suki1964 one day at a time honey, a brave lass and we are all behind you You can always have a chinwag on here if you feel a bit down .

Walking and a swim sounds good I have a mobility problem and can't walk that fast but I find swimming is brilliant for my joints and always feel better for a gentle splash around in the local pool.

I intend to get back to my morning mile after tha weekend. I used to do it every morning before breakfast. I started off just a little bit every day then increased over the following weeks until I was doing a regular mile in the morning. I took me awhile, and I'm not very fast and have to stop for a breather ,but I'm not in a race, I am just doing it to keep my old joints working as long as I can.

Our local library do a healthy living walk for folk a short half hour ,or a longer 45 minute one We all have a nice stroll and a natter through the park, thiose with a little dog bring them as well.As long as I am wrapped up even the weather doesn't stop me .Getting a different mindset will help I think, good luck though and I hope you keep us all posted on how you are getting on

Continue working through my yarn stash. This year I've knitted 4 adult garments and 8 toddler jumpers so it's going down slowly but there's still a lot left. :o
Like blackcatsx2, continue with the whole-house de-clutter. The kitchen is next on the hit-list! ;)

    Have made a start! :j

Fished out enough yarn from stash to knit a jumper for DH. I did one for Xmas but gave him it early as it was so cold and he asked if I would do another one. Oh joy, there was enough for no.2 version without having to buy yet more. :):)

Have just joined the 2018 items in 2018 thread to help with the whole-house de-clutter.
Be kind to others and to yourself too.

Suki is there a defined "walk" nearby? We have a municipal park with fencing & paths around, or there is another around the back of the zoo & a hotel golf course, plus we have our "3 piers" - we walk from home out to either North or South Pier, walk along the prom to the other end pasding Central Pier on the way, and then back home. Its about 5-6miles and takes around 2 hours to complete without shopping stops!

I’m really looking forward to 2018.

There are lots of things I want to do - some major life changes, others far less so - but what I want to do this year is schedule everything to a timeline. That’s what tomorrow afternoon is for ;)
