Moving Date

Hi All
I am new to the forum so apologies if this is under the wrong category.
I am a first time buyer and have a moving date of next week. I was just looking for advice on what I should/need to do with regard to energy providers. Does this need to be arranged before hand or when I am actually in the property?
If anyone has any other tips for 'Moving Day' they'd be much appreciated :-)

Read meters when you move in and phone the current supplier.
Now google/bing/duckduckgo "moving day lists" for everyting else!0 -
Take meter readings when you move in and contact current energy providers. Shop around to see whose cheapest then and move provider if you need to.
Make a list of who you need to contact with new address, it's amazing how many there are.
Is it just yourself or partner? Children? Pets?
If you have children or pets try to leave them with relatives on moving day, otherwise it will be harder to get done.
Make up your bed when you get in property, at least you'll be able to crash when you're ready. Have number for local takeaway as you'll be shattered and starving at the end of the day.

Take a photo of the meter readings....
Unlikely to be problems, but saves many an argument later.0 -
It's myself and my girlfriend. Both first time buyers so very green when it comes to all this. Thanks for your advice :-)
Now it's time to look in to Life Insurance and Home Insurance etc ......
I'm starting to feel like a real grown up0 -
Congrats! We moved two weeks ago, third time buyers but know how you feel.
Existing energy co will just stick you on their standard tariff if you don't get around to organising before move day so don't panic.
Can you live without broadband and telly for a bit? We couldn't because husband works from home and I'm Netflix obsessed so we arranged that to be installed day after moving.
Invest in a postal redirection, it costs but then you can just do the key address changes (HMRC, DVLA, TV licence, banking) and do the others as and when post from them reminds you.
Our previous owners left us their picks of the best takeaway menus, lifesaver! I made up duvet and pillows then stuffed them in bin bags so our bed was quick to make.
Final tip - get any stuff you need in the Boxing Day/January/End of winter sales. Enjoy!
Ps. We're nowhere near unpacked yet lol0 -
Are you moving yourselves or using a moving service? If you're moving yourselves start packing sooner than you think you need to, label boxes for what rooms they should go in (boxes all look at same once sealed) and have a box for the kettle / tea / coffee / biscuits etc so you can have a cuppa and a break while unpacking without searching 101 boxes.Feb 2015 NSD Challenge 8/12JAN NSD 11/16
