Re. Car Insurance Notification of Incident

Options
Hi all

I'm not sure what to do here, regarding this situation as there is so much conflicting advice.

Should I notify my insurers of an incident, even though there is no intention to claim?

There was no damage to the OP's car and just a crack on my license plate that I will fix myself. It was a very very minor bump at a roundabout. I exchanged details with the OP and took photos.

After searching this morning I found my insurer requires notice within 7 days of an incident that may result in a claim, unfortunately this happened 9 days ago.

Many suggest that simply informing an insurance company will result in unfair hike in premiums and we shouldn't be willing to disclose so much information such as this minor incident to them. Others say we have to disclose to the insurance company?!

Advice please is very much needed! Thank you.

You seem to know the facts from your post.

Your policy says that you need to notify the insurer of an any incident. You've had an incident, so by not telling your insurer, you're in breach of your policy conditions.

If nobody claims, it will be recorded as a notification only. Some insurers do charge extra for having a notification only claim, some don't.

Up to you to decide what to do.

  • Tried to phone to log incident and made clear it was simply a notification of an incident and I am being told by them that it will go down as a non fault claim anyway and declared to future insurers?! What is this? Please can somebody help me here, I refused to comment any further and said I will go away and do some more research as I didn't agree with this situation. After lots of research I was under the impression that they only log information unless a claim is made?

No your research has let you down

All reported losses go on the record and a shared database. Whether or not it results in a claim is irrelevant

When you apply for a quote you are usually asked for your history of claims and/or losses

If you have any to disclose (you do have this one you tell us about) then they ask whether or not you lost NCD/cost your insurer/etc

Now you reported it, nothing you can do to remove it from your history

On your record now. You'll need to disclose this incident when applying for insurance in the future.
