One of the criteria when we were looking to move was being able to get round to the back of my property without going through the house or garage. I could even do that in my terraced house.

I would not have bought one of these 'link detached' for that reason.

We bought a semi detached bungalow with space down the side.

But if you don't mind, then that's your choice. As for the two houses under discussion, I would get the one with the trees in the back garden. |In the summer, it won't be as overlooked as the other one.

One definitely has a north facing garden and the other one looks like it has a north facing garden. With a small garden like these that would be a no-no to me.

Same for me. When I was hunting I obsessed about how much sun both house and garden get at different times of the day throughout the year. First thing I looked at on new listings. No one else I know seems to give it a second thought (which is why we have the BBQs at mine!).

It actually doesn't matter what it is listed as so long as someone wants to buy it.

I will always think of link detached as a kind of terrace that some people will pay more for but which I would not buy under any circumstances because I view them as mostly overpriced for what they are. Some people like them. Some people like me hate them.

What is most important is how they compare in price to what else is on the market. A house would have to be much bigger and better to be £60k more than one that has sold recently. I am not sure that these are?

In our area the link detached houses (when thinking of some I know specifically) tend to be bigger than both terraced houses and a number of semis in the area, hence the higher asking prices for them and greater perceived desireability.
In addition, I have a feeling they are linked in pairs - so garages in the middle between each house, but access down the other external side of each property to the back....I'll have to double check when I next drive past. I also have a feeling no one has extended or changed the use of their garages so there may be something in place to prevent this. They sew 1960s houses so I'm sure if it were possible to do so, someone would have by now.

  • If anyone's interested, both houses are now sold (see rightmove links). The Northwood one sold within a week of its open day.
