    Why?
Is it because YOU are incompetent?

No. It's because YOU are. I, on the other hand, am a Registered Electrician.

What's wrong with it? Cutting the cable, using a connector block and then placing inside a suitably rated waterproof choc box is surely fine? What's the alternative call out an electrician who I'm guessing isn't trained to replace a cable from the inside of the device so resulting in a probable voiding of the devices warranty and also a call out charge of £80+ for 10 mins work...

No enclosure was mentioned. Block connectors in insulation tape are wholly inadequate and also don't provide strain relief. The insulation can also be removed without destruction. Also there would be no mechanical protection where the sheath had been removed. It was entirely clear that the person suggesting this was clueless in every respect.

If I'm clueless, then you're a moron. It's a money saving site, OP has no need to call out a "qualified" electrician, but rewiring completely is probably too daunting for OP.

Just using a terminal block wrapped in insulation tape may be more dangerous then just leaving the cable alone. With no cord grips, it only requires one accidental tug on the cable to leave live wires exposed.

The picture in the post by shaun from Africa shows the terminal blocks in a properly designed enclosure with cord grips. Alternatively, purpose designed flex connectors do exist, such as https://www.homebase.co.uk/13a-3-core-flex-connector-white_p823185
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

I suppose killing people prematurely might save them money over the years that they're no longer alive but nonetheless your advice is atrocious and wrong. Cease and desist.
