He is single and loves alone.

    Um....too much information?

Would it be possible for you to pay the mortgage for a few months while recovers from illness?

He could repay you as soon as possible once he is in a better situation?

Does he have problems looking after himself because of his illness, if so how long has it been and how long is it expected to last?
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.

You cannot claim ESA whilst receiving SSP

    https://www.gov.uk/employment-support-allowance/eligibility

If there was an eligibility for an income based benefit then the correct benefit would be Income Support as claiming SSP is one of the criteria to claim Income Support.

However, you have raised an interesting point 'when the going gets tough', as to whether the OP's son should make a claim now for Income support. He would not be eligible because SSP is more money than the single person's allowance for IS and housing costs are not added for 39 weeks BUT am unsure whether the 39 weeks only begin after a claim for IS has been made or whether the SSP period counts towards the 39 weeks.

Can't access Decision Makers Guide at the moment but have a feeling that SSP counts towards the 39 weeks. May be worth making a call to Job Centre (Income Support ) and ask the question. Hopefully the OP's son is not off work long term.

The other possibility may be Council Tax Support/Reduction.

I have to confess to getting a bit rusty on the rules around IS, but as I recall the initial IS claim will be closed from the outset but a letter should be sent to the claimant advising them to reclaim once SSP ends. Things might have changed following the change from 13 to 39 weeks qualifying period for mortgage interest support.

    How SMI is paid

SMI is normally paid direct to your lender.

Payments begin 39 weeks after you claim one of the following:

    Income Support
    Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
    income-related Employment and Support Allowance
    Universal Credit

If you apply for any of these benefits on or after 7 July 2017, you won’t be able to get SMI benefit. You can get an SMI loan instead.

I may have to do this, it all depends on what arrangement he can come to with his mortgage company.

His hospital op is on 12th, it all depends on how that goes. Or if it gets cancelled a third time. However, that is to do with his heart and he still has problems with mobility which means he could not currently do his job. He is managing to look after himself at home.

He was also due to see Occupational Health at work on 12th - work are classing this a long term sick - coming up to 3 months off work.

He has an appointment for Universal Credit tomorrow.

    An update.

My son went back to hospital - he had a completely blocked artery but the good news was that his heart had bypassed itself. When reading up on this I found that good exercise is the one thing that can enable this - and fortunately I think we have to thank his job for this as he is on his feet constantly.

He then went to for physio and made such good progress that he has been able to return to work - short hours at first but he is now up to full time hours again.

He applied for Universal Credit, but was awarded 0.00. He was going to query that as it would have been impossible to live just on his SSP, but fortunately that is no longer necessary.

    Another update

My son found another job which he was able to do through an agency but unfortunately his sciatica has caused him problems again and after a fall the weekend before last, was not able to go to work on the Monday morning. I saw him fall at Christmas - his leg just gives way.

He phoned work in the morning and just said he had hurt his leg and was unable to get in that day, and was told to contact the agency, which he had already done. Then the agency rang to say he was no longer required by the firm.

He's just had an appointment with Universal Credit and told he will get £317 a month. Plus he has to job search for 20 hours a week. He's also just had an MRI scan today and it is possible he may need an operation on his spine.

Obviously he won't be able to pay his mortgage for some time - he's up to date so far with his mortgage. Without my help again he'll lose the house.

I'm thinking it maybe time for him to try to claim some disability payments. He really wants to work but struggles to do so. I'm staying with him at the moment as he is having problems getting day to day things done

    Any advice?

As he is on Universal Credit he needs to get a fit note from his doctor which will then 'switch off' his job searching.

    http://data.parliament.uk/DepositedPapers/Files/DEP2018-0759/CC_-_Switching_off_WA_and_WRA_v8.0.pdf

Depending on his prognosis he may then need to be ask to be assessed for work capability through UC. His doctor will need to continue to give fit notes.

Again, depending on his prognosis he may be eligible for PIP (Personal Independence Payment. Do some googling about this.

There is really nothing else to claim.

There is help for mortgage payments through a loan but you do not qualify for 39 weeks.

I really don't know what else to suggest. Has he spoken to his mortgage company?

To be absolutely honest, the bank of mum and dad will be the only way forward until you know the extent of his condition. Hopefully it will be a temporary thing.

Perhaps in the future he will consider a lodger as this might give him a financial safety net in the case of 'emergencies'.

Thank you. I have looked at this but it only stops the job search requirement for 2 weeks. My son said he knew this as the adviser said it was not worth stopping it for so short a time!

I've decided to add an update to this. I paid my son's mortgage and added more on top to help him pay his bills until April. Then he managed to find a new job which he was at until August when he had an motorbike accident, at work, which landed him in hospital with 7 broken ribs. It was due to bad road conditions, no one else or other vehicle involved.

He had an operation to fix this and was sent home to recuperate and I moved in with him. However, a week later I woke up to find he had passed away during the night due to his heart disease.

He was happier working, being able to pay his bills, his mortgage and not have to worry. His father had passed away in June, and ironically, my son missed his last appointment with his heart specialist because he had to swap his day off to go to his dad's funeral. His father left him enough money through his will which would have paid his mortgage off, but sadly he didn't live long enough to receive it.
