dial up ISP with 0800 access - help please!

I am looking for an internet dial up package (anytime use) that has an 0800 access number (not 0808 or 0844). My phone line is on an exchange which will not allow 0808 numbers to be dialled. I have to dial a prefix number to get an 0800 line. I have been with AOL before (£14.99) unlimited dial up access but they only have an 0808 BT number.

Any help appreciated.

I don't believe that any dial-up ISP uses an 0800 number!

Which telephone network are you connected to? If it's BT then it seems rather odd for them to bar such numbers, have you asked them why? If this is a CPS line can't you force the carrier over to the BT network by using the 1280 prefix?

Shell UK used to have one, way back in the mists of time. It was an 0800 number, and IIRC, was only available 9pm - 7am Mon - Fri. Around about 1998 that was. I used it to supplement my PAYG dialup at the time. Frighteningly slow speeds, even in those days.

Sorry to do this to you phil, but that page was written in Feb 2000! A tad out of date.

    Broadband?

Sadly even in this day and age not everywhere is broadband enabled yet, and also i was almost unable to get broadband last year when BT wanted a £500 deposit off me to enable the line for broadband because the previous person in the flat had run off without paying the bill and had been got by one of those rogue dialers. What that had to do with me I have no idea and even when i reminded them that if they let me have broadband i wouldn't be subject to the risk from rogue dialers they still wouldn't budge. £500 was simply something which I couldn't afford, thankfully there was cable in the area so I got NTL however there easily could not have been.

Anyway, sorry op i dont know any 0800 dialup places.

When I used to be on dial-up and had any problems accessing during busy periods I always used this company on a dial-up basis:-

First class service and it is an 0845 number. You will NOT get any ISP offering 0800 number as this is how they pay for their service, they make a small amount on each call.

There is a work-around that will allow you to dial any of the 0808 freephone dial up numbers on your line which bars 0808 calls.

You'll need to sign up for a prepay account with Telesave (see www.telesave.co.uk) - to do this call 0800 066 4000 and follow the automatic prompts. This sets you up with £10 of calling credit.

You can access this calling credit by dialling 0800 066 2266. A recorded voice will say "you have £10 credit remaining". You can then dial an 0808 number via this account - and it WILL NOT cost anything from your telesave account - or at least it didn't last time I used it.

This gives you access to all the services that work via 0808 on your 0808-barred line, such as dmcdial.net's £5.99 for 40 hours (I've found this very reliable) or breathe's £7.99 unlimited service.

You can of course also use your telesave account for all your other phone calls if other types of chargeable calls are also barred because you are making all calls via the 0800 066 2266 freephone access code.

    Hope this helps.
