Tori, I just slip my card in my jeans pocket

You can get little packets kinda like a phone case but thinner, would be a wise investment, better safe than sorry, no matter what security people invent, some other smart begger soon works out how to break it sadly.
  • Contactless is just so easy.

I've just got in from a trip down to London on business. Once upon a time you had to queue to buy a Day Pass for the Tube, then you had to have an Oyster card (which involved a one-off payment for the card itself, and then you had to top it up, so you always had money 'sitting' on it because you didn't want to take the risk of it running out). Now, you just swipe your contactless card on the yellow pad and you're off!! You only pay for the journeys you make, and you can see on your bank statements how much each journey has cost. I love it.

Even my parents (who are in their eighties) use contactless on the Underground!

For people who are still unsure, it's really just a case of getting used to it - I'm sure when they got rid of white fivers there was an uproar!!

Oh dear that sounds a bit condescending although I am sure it was not meant that way :)

It is nothing to do with age or technology but it is all about being debt free and building savings and the best way is by taking a certain amount of actual cash and that is what the maximum spend would be. Reading bank statements is after the fact, the fact that spending has taken place and I am positive that people who wave a card about make many un-needed spends, a coffee here, a paper there, a pack of sandwiches. No queueing means more impulsive spending

    It's horses for courses.
I'm smart I carry both :rotfl: the chippy doesn't except cards :o
We should never be 100% reliant on any technology or system, so should have access to both cash and cards. Just please keep them separate, the amount of people that keep their cash and cards together in there purse amazes me. I had this with my DIL she carried her world in her purse cash, cards driving license, lost the lot when her purse was stolen, with no high street bank branch anymore she had to wait a week for the card and pin to turn up.

Workmen digging up the road obviously cut through something a couple of days ago because all the shops had flickering lights. But not a full power cut. M&S would only take cash though their tills were still working, so I was glad I had cash. But Sainsbury’s tills weren’t working at all

I can’t use my oldies pass on trains in London before 9.30 and once a week I have to get a train to a DLR station before 9.30 and from there the rest of the journey is covered by the pass. If I use contactless the fare is governed by TLR pricing. If I buy a ticket at the ticket office or the machine, it is covered by Railway pricing and it’s more expensive. That overcame my objections

With the assistance of my sister and the wonderful instructions from PipneyJane I have now got a bills account and an everyday account (my naming of the accounts)
When paid I shall withdraw enough money for the shopping purse and trial it.
I’m rather looking forward to this again.

Last night said sister told me she already has a foil sleeve and had spares, that didn’t go down too well as I could have saved £3.29 - oh well I shall try to give them away at work.

I do think contactless cards have their place – they are really quick transaction wise but I have got the stage where I have to curb my usage of them – it is rather easy just to scan and leave and this all adds up

You may have seen it or already aware but this Guardian article points out all concerns etc relating to the lose of cash and usage of cards

I think because I've been ill for a long time and get easily hassled, I recoil in horror from the idea of paying for everything with a card and then getting in a right muddle because I haven't a clue what's coming off and what is not. It just seems so much simpler and easier to have the money in my purse and pay for things and that's an end to it :D
  • I think if you're going to make impulse purchases of things you don't need/can't afford then the method of payment isn't going to make much difference.

It's picking the stuff up off the shelf that's the problem, not the payment method.
