lost keys for land rover

Hello all
Anyone help with this - my hubby has lost the only remaining ignition key for his land rover. the insurance covers up to £300 for replacement locks.
He still has the fob, the "key" part has come adrift and is lost.
There is no spare.
Is the only thing to do to have the locks changed? ie ignition and doors?
Can anyone recommend how to go about getting the locks changed? Is this something only a land rover dealer can do, or is there any alternative?

....and please don't suggest that he should have got a spare key cut long ago - that did not go down too well when I said it.... :)

  • How olds the Land Rover?

If it’s out of warranty any decent mobile vehicle locksmith should be able to change them, ring a few and get quotes.

Or, he may be able to get replacement keys with the chassis and/or key fob number

If the fob contains the electronics and is ok I would assume you only need the metal key. Contact Land Rover and ask if they can supply replacements. As above they may be able to do this from the vehicle details.

    As above
LandRover should know the key number if you go with the V5 and some proof of ownership.

Is it just the blade that is lost, and you still have the chip part? A decent locksmith could make a new key, really easily if you remove the ignition lock and give it to him, and in The Olden Days the key number would have been on the lock barrel anyway.
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))
  • Thanks all for your replies - much appreciated. Yep - still have the electronic part, it is just the metal bit that is missing. Will see if he can remove the ignition barrel and use that to get a new key made.

For the metal blade only, a franchised dealer should be able to look up and order a correctly cut replacement at a reasonable cost, by the vehicle's VIN.

Go to a main dealer with proof of ID and the V5. They'll be able to get a replacement key using the VIN number. Whilst the key may seem expensive it'll be cheaper than paying someone to replace all the locks.

I believe the AA can cut a key on the spot, even if you are not a member.

  • Thanks everyone for your helpful replies on this. Hubby found a mobile locksmith who was able to cut the key correctly having found the right design using the VIN. Excellent service - cut within a few minutes - and reasonable cost of £60, which should be covered by insurance. OH very happy to be able drive his Landy again...... and I still have my designated driver over Christmas! Happy festivities everyone!
  • Bet he buys a spare now :)
  • Ooh yes, I shall personally be supervising the cutting of the spare after all the stress of losing the key this week!

Anyway - highly recommend the very helpful chap who cut the key yesterday - https://www.carkeyman.com - if anyone in central Scotland ever needs his services!
