Neither are especially good for public transport. I'd probably go for the Travelodge at Cameron Toll, Ibis Budget at The Gyle or Premier Inn at Edinburgh Park all of which have excellent bus / tram transport to central Edinburgh. The latter have decent sized car parks, the former a small car park but with free parking just across the road

Maybe it would help if he told us what his budget is.
