I just applied to one an the biotrax website and frankly, I'm rather terrified that I've actually applied. I could use the money, being a student and all, and I've actually been interested in applying to clinical trials but I guess it's just a bit daunting.

It's an asthma one, which, tbh, sounds rather innocuous. I highly doubt that asthma prevention methods are going to kill me, it's just the idea is a bit overwhelming.

No guarantee I'll get in, of course, but you don't know *shrugs*

Completed a study that was over 8 days and nights with Hammersmith Medicines Research for £1.3k very recently - Was a bit scared at first but got chatting with other volunteers over the week and it wasn't that bad at all.

My only advice is take a laptop and plenty of books to read because it can be pretty boring at times!!!

All medical research has to be tested on people. Tbh the majority of studys ive signed up for are non invasive ones. I like doing the sleep studies or the ones where they want healthy vounteers to scan their heads or something along those lines. At the end of the day if you sign up for a study then dont want to do it then you have the right to withdraw AT ANY TIME.

Anyone the remember North Park (?) hospital medical trials fiasco? No thanks.

Your right this was a pretty bad situation, but thousands of clinical trials happen every day with no adverse consquences.

You need to ask what 'phase the trial is'

    Pre-clinical is animals and invitro

phase 0 - small study on people

    phase 1 - larger

    phase 2- even larger.

Lets remember that pencillin is harmless to most adults but if it was tested on animals it would have killed them, ergo clinical trials are necessary.

Make up is tested on animals.

completely wrong! were do I start, your one off the phases (there is no phase 0.

Phase I is a small sized study in healthy volunteers, mainly testing safety, efficacy and dose and often paid.

Phase II is slightly larger study perfecting dose, safety and efficacy in subjects with the condition (non-paid)

Phase III is large scale trial needed for marketing application in subjects with the condition mainly to prove efficacy (non-paid)

Phase IV often post-marketing (drug already on market) against a comparator to collect data to help marketing (non-paid)

Not all make up is tested on animals
  • Hi all - I've just found this thread and am very interested. However, can anyone tell me if all participants have to be medication free as a rule?

Thanks for all the very helpful information posted by everyone here. It's really useful and informed.:)

    Thanks
    Carol

    Hi Carol

I have done a clinical trial and a lot of the information they want from you relies on your honesty. For example, a lot of the trials want health volunteers who don't drink or smoke, or who have not taken any over-the-counter medication for XX amount of days prior to the study...

But when you sign up for a clinical trial and take part in a screening by one of their physicians or nurses, you'll also fill in a GP Consent Form and your Doc will tell the clinical research team about any prescription medication you've had.

I also have a question for anyone who has done a few trials. I just finished a 3 week long clinical trial, and found out that you're not 'allowed' to do another trial before 3 or even 4 months after the last dose of your last study.

Someone else told me it's more to do with blood - as you give blood quite often on these trials, they want a wait of a few months so you have enough red blood cells.

I'm wondering if anyone has successfully got into another clinical trial soon/immediately after doing another one? Is there a central database that is regularly updated with all your patient info, or do they ask your GP if you've been on one recently? If you don't want to say out loud, shoot me a PM.

    Cheers
  • Hi Grumble - many thanks for this information. I asked because I have a condition called Cushing's Disease which required neurosurgery in 2001 and affects every major organ in your body. Had to give up my career but would like to do something like this to advance medical knowledge - and for the DOSH!!! I take about 30 tabs a day of various medication so I don't know what their attitude would be to someone like me.

Anyway, I'm doing some research into it and hope it comes to something.

    Best wishes
    Carol :)
