I have a B&B who have asked for my prices for their linen. Don't know what to charge, local johnsons offer ironing (drop off only) £17.95 for a large service iron, need to go and see how large their bags are. I gave the lady my domestic prices and warned her their probably way too high for what she needs.

    Help ! cheers

Just got my first customer yesterday thru a gumtree ad. She said she wants to make it a weekly arrangement. Yippee. It's a start. Hopefully word of mouth will bring in more work.

As for my iron, it's just a normal steam iron - hope if business picks up I can get a steam generator iron.

I honestly think a steam generator is a must when you get a few customers as it really cuts down on time.
I have a few customers but not every day which suits me as I have a main job. However I do doubt that I am making much money as i've no idea how much the electric is costing me. I am faster than when I started 2 years ago but then I haven't put my prices up since I started. It still takes a long time.
mind you my own ironing seems easy peasy now;)

    Hi there everyone!
I'm a newbie and was wondering if you could give me a little advice. At the mo, my oh is unable to work due to health issues and we have 4 little ones so I've been looking for something to do myself. A home ironing service would be ideal as I spent a lot of time doing it anyway! However, I'm an undischarged bankrupt so I'm not sure if this stops me from doing anything? Also, I know it can make insurance more expensive so was wondering if anyone know a good insurance company for people like me? Thank you in advance for any advice or tips you might have!
  • Hi all, I've come across this thread after starting my own so I'll just ask here! This seems like it'd be ideal for me but I was wondering how you get the clothes nicely back to customers? I assume most of them are hung up? We have ford galaxy so high enough to hang stuff up in but on what? And also, if you just return some clothes folded do you buy boxes or something to put them in? Many thanks for any advice. There's nothing like this in my area so I'm hoping it'll be viable for me :)

Hello! There's already a big discussion on this - I can't post links yet but it's usually on the first or second page - "Starting an ironing service - official MSE discussion". If you stick this on there you might have more joy.

    Good luck!

    Hi

On advice from this forum I fixed a length of dowling (like a broom handle) across the back of my car so that it lays on each handle. (hope thats a clear enough explanation:o) its best that you wrap it with pipe insulation so that the hangers don't slip.
I send my items back in polythene garment covers which I buy form ebay. 3 per cover and you could ask customers to return them if you want. I don't buy boxes I just put a garment cover over a pile of folded items and then just put them on the back seat & carry them in.
Hope this helps & good luck:)
