ive been doing it for a few weeks now, with the first 2 weeks pay i bought myself a fairly decent russell hobbs steam iron, not a steam generator one but it is very good!
ive been following the same footsteps as Steph1986 in charging per item, but ive been charging 60p per item. 20 items takes about an hour (lots of shirts!!) and i get £12 so pretty good i like to think, oh and they drop off and collect!
good luck to all ironers!0 -
Fantastic thread! I'm starting an ironing business (Kelso, Borders if you are interested!) with beautifully starched mens' shirts a speciality. Once both my Wees are at school at the end of August I'll be out cleaning too - my Mrs Mop cards are going out this week so I can get booked up in advance. It's honest work, it's active and it has to beat working p/t in an office with a numpty boss and paying for someone else to look after your children...Grocery Challenge - no idea on monthly spend, guessing at £300
Budget started April 15 - so allowing £150 and revise from there (pantry well-stocked).
April £150/£1.900 -
DaisyDaisy,
thats what ive been doing since january. My son started school and i clean houses 9.30-2.30 and iron on my day off or in the evening.
Its great i work when i want, im self employed and if my son is ever ill im off work with him and pick up the cleaning i missed when hes back to school.
I charge £10 per hour for cleaning, i work my butt off but i love it! i used to be an optical dispenser earning £6 ph!!! with no hope of payrise (tight as* boss)
but this is great no one to answer to just work hard and thoroughly and you'll be fine.
I live in a small village and theyres no shortage of work!!
good luck!

I'm so surprised more people don't do it: it's better money than an office, and it's all yours! And no office politics either ;-) I can't wait to get going!Grocery Challenge - no idea on monthly spend, guessing at £300

Hi
I'm just starting my laundry service up again after bringing my children up. I'm still going to be working full time in an office until its up and running. I'm based in Southport but have been asked if I know anyone in Manchester area. I had lots of advice and help on here so said I would ask around. Please let me know if you work the Manchester area and let me have contact details I can forward...
Thanks

What part of Manchester are you looking at? My OH's mum's friend has a full laundry service in Middleton not sure what other areas she covers but I can find out for you.
I hope everyone is doing well? I know setting up your own business is a huge step but it is worth it especially if you do it from home you can have a break when you like even make it a split shift and do some ironing in the morning go shopping and then come back and finish off we've done that on many occasions
We have noticed in the last few months though that people are selectivley sending more so now i.e sending 20 shirts or 20 pairs of dress trousers hopefully non of you have this problem and customers are sending equal amounts of everything including tshirts. If not when you get a new customer say its only £what ever amount per what ever MIXED items so they know they can't take the micky.
If they do and they have been told charge them a bit extra until they get the message.
If any of you need any help just send me a pm I don't look here often.

Hi guys
My mum has been talking about setting up her own ironing business so I've read this thread with interest. I think she'd be excellent at it but I was just wondering how much you all paid in terms of public liability insurance? x0
