It is one of those, he's not a friend.
Waitrose don’t do it either. In fact, I’ve sometimes got longer dates on a delivery than were available in store.
I do have a friend who is a picker at Sainsburys (in fact I know a number of people who work in our local one) and they don’t do it.
I think, in general, supermarkets are good in these situations and will replace or refund without qualm. I always do polite and friendly when raising these types of issues0 -
Would never use online shopping, I know somebody that is a picker and they're told to use short date items that physical shoppers would decline.
Not all retailers use that.
1 where I worked we were told to pick the best date but as we were on the clock you couldn't spend too much time looking for the best date.0 -
That would be a bit stupid since all the supermarkets who deliver will usually refund things you're not happy with anyway.
Sainsburys, Tesco and Asda definitely don't do this so if your friend works for one of these they should report the manager for telling them to do this.
Also, my experience with Tesco, is that if there are items with short dates, they bag them separately and draw your attention to them at the point of collection/delivery so you can reject them immediately if it's not acceptable.3.6 kW PV in the Midlands - 9x Sharp 400W black panels - 6x facing SE and 3x facing SW, Solaredge Optimisers and Inverter. 400W Derril Water (one day). To add my twopeneth. Ocado give me a receipt with the best-by dates and expected dates of other items. Anything not suitable can be rejected after delivery if you don't spot it before. From memory I've never had a best-by date anything less than a week. You get what you pay for I guess.0

I shop with Ocado a couple of times a year and have had quite short dates but to be fair they have a minimum guarantee on each product so you know before you order and can plan accordingly.
I'd never tried Iceland before and just needed a few basics, they had the lowest order amount (minimum £35) to free delivery too. Most of the order was accurate and there was no problem with it. They also refunded with no quibble over the phone, good customer service (plus free phone number).0
