Does anyone know the legal requirements around getting people to sign release forms?

Suze - what do you mean exactly?

Look at the Own-It website that I mentioned above. If the answer's not there send them an email query. I do know that if you sign a release form giving over the rights to your photos, that's pretty much the end of it and you will no longer have any rights to them.

I mean in terms of you taking a photograph which has people in it. Do you need to get those people to sign a release form to say it's OK for you to use/sell that photo?

  • I believe that if a person is identifiable in a photograph, you must obtain a model release for to be able to sell that image.

At least, I'm pretty sure that's how it is.

If the picture is for commercial use then yes a model release is required or if the picture is being sold royalty free then it would be advisable as buyers of royalty free tend to expect them. Any editorial use is usualy accepted as not requiring a model release. Though if the picture is taken on someone elses property there may well be restrictions applied to photography by the property owner, for example in the original query when the pictures were taken at a concert.

Sam if you read back through this thread you'll see that fotolia, while not directly mentioned, is one of the macro sites that I've advised against using.

I also note that this thread is about selling photos on line not web graphics. It may be great for web graphics but for selling images, microstock sites are daylight robbery and can land people in bother.

Just done a quick article on this subject on my site and wondered if anyone had experience of using the Citizen Photojournalism sites?

  • Hey guys,

I'm a bit of a budding photographer (see www.flickr.com/photos/davidcameron) and I was wondering if anyone knew of websites that help you sell your shots online ebay-style.

I've had quite a few compliments on my work and some I have had mounted and framed for friends etc. but I think based on the "sell what you know" method I could make a bit of cash out of them as well.

    Anyone do this already?

    Thanks!
