Please feel free to point out how incredibly stupid I am, if applicable, but I have just signed up to British Images, registered, recieved the email, signed in as stated....but there is nowhere to upload my images! What am I doing wrong?

I was also going to sign up to Photographers Direct, but notice that they act as an agent, and supplying the hard copies is down to the photogropher? I would not want to provide the prints myself...what other places could I sell pics for a reasonable amount of money, of non-Uk subjects? Thanks

PD.com puts you in touch with the buyer and it's then up to you to negotiate a price and agree a sale. Thte buyer always has a budget and will offer you a price. You can either accept, negotiate or refuse.
You're right = they don't supply anything to the buyer - you do.
All you upload is a small thumbnail and the buyer decides what they want to buy from that. I sold an image for a calendar and the company wanted the original digital file. I sent it to them via email and a few days later the agreed amount of money arrived in my account. They were from Germany so i agreed a price in Euros but it appeared in my account as the equivalent sum in sterling.

In most cases the buyer would probably want the digital image rather than a poster.

Anyway - there are numerous places online that can provide high quality prints. I've ordered loads at30inches x 20inches. Some will print even larger.

    What about this site: http://www.cutcaster.com/search/browse/photos/

    Any good?

Anyone seriously interested in selling images should avoid any and all royalty free sites.

If your images are good enough to sell then why not negotiate your own price that's higher than any royalty free site?

  • good point darich but our site is actually pretty different. i am the founder of Cutcaster and we allow you to sell your photos or videos by setting your own price or using our pricing algorithm to take a lot of the thought out of having to price it if you don't know. We don't tell you what to charge but can help if you need it. Selling them royalty free doesn't mean you have to price them very low.

Plus, buyers can go in and bid on your content so if you do price it too high you can still see where the demand is and sales don't slip through the cracks. Once you receive a bid you can accept, decline or resubmit a new offer back to the buyer. if you have anymore questions email me at john AT cutcaster.com and I'll answer any questions or visit the site at https://www.cutcaster.com. thanks :rotfl:
  • Thank you everyone for responding. The truth is I just love taking photos, I don't have much clue about the technical aspects...:o

So Darich, if I was to sell a digital file on PD, I would just email it to the buyer in the same format as I have it saved on my pc?

And if I sold a hard copy I would upload it onto a photo printing website (could you possibly pm a couple of recommended sites if you have time, I'm guessing snapfish and the like wouldn't cut it!) and then have them deliver direct to the customer?

I'm sorry, I must sound utterly clueless, thank you again for your responses.

How you send the image to the buyer would depend on their requirements. For the image i sold, they requested the full size image (approx 8mb) as a jpg. I emailed it to them and they confirmed receipt by return email.

I have received a couple of requests from people wanting to buy posters of my prints but when i quoted them a price they then decided against it. I should add that my pricing is very much determined by the cost of printing. Printing at the size requested costs almost £20 so when i quoted £40 (they don't know the costs of prints) they declined to buy.

    The sites i've are
    https://www.photobox.co.uk
    https://www.bonusprint.co.uk
    https://www.colourmailer.co.uk
https://www.photodeal.co.uk - have made a couple of mistakes with prints but always rectified errors. Also don't print images as glossy photos but as large posters. It's difficult to explain but if you saw them next to photos you'd immediately see the difference. I prefer to pay the small amount extra to photobox who've always been excellent.

I think i've used snapfish too but couldn't be sure.

If you need anything else then feel free to ask either here or via pm.

    Thanks John
I hope you realise i wasn't having a go at your site or company.
It's just that with royalty free you lose control of the image once it's sold. I feel that if an image is good enough to buy then why not retain the rights so you can control where, when and how often it's used.

Out of interest, since i can set the price i may have a look on your site and even upload a few images to see what happens.

You never know - you may convert me!

  • of course not darich and trust me i love to hear that feedback bc it helps us make our site better. if you see anything else that can help us let me know or if you have any other fears i'd def like to hear them.

in all honesty i dont like the term Royalty free because it basically means rights not managed.
i'd just as soon not talk about the rights at all and leave it up to the buyer and seller to mange the discussion and negotiation. we are going to allow for seamless negotiation of licensing rights in the near future so you can sell RM, RF, RR whatever you want and you have control over what you want to price it at. i'll explain more about the licensing platform once we launch it ;-)
If anyone else has any questions let me know.

    best.
