Selling photos online... official MoneySavingExpert.com discussion

What I am looking for disappointingly does not seem to be available - or at least not easy to find. Myself and a friend went to a family charity event and took photos of families and children for free. Because there are around 500 photos, we said we would make them available online so that the parents could order prints. Because this was a charitable event and we are still learning we did not charge for taking the pictures.
We were looking for something similar to photobox, where for example, the site would charge 15p for a 6x4 print, but we would up the price to 25p and keep 10p. For large prints we were thinking of charging 50p extra.
Because these are pictures of families and children, the gallery would have to be accessible to the people who took part, i.e. not public. We can't use photobox because their galleries are public, also I am not sure they even have the facility yet on the new website.
If anybody has any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated.
Hi Beanzy
I'd suggest uploading the pics to one of the free web albums (you can set the privacy settings so that just your friends/family – or in this case, the families of the children – can see them). Then send the relevant people the link, and password if necessary. The only site like this I can think of offhand is Picasa (see link below) – I viewed a friend's wedding album this way.

Then, if they'd like to buy any prints, get them to tell you which ones, and you can upload the relevant images to Snapfish or Photobox yourself (conveniently disguising your profit!).
And if your not already a member of the sites, I think you can get cashback on both through Quidco!
Hope that helps

Are there any sites where I can have a display of photos with a watermark so people would not be able to steal the photos, and then sell them at prices I specify?0

I don't know about any sites that would provide the watermark, but personally I just created my own in Photoshop and uploaded those files to sites. I've watermarked them in a couple of places (with my name and © 2008 in one corner and a large © symbol in the opposite corner) so although you can still clearly see the image, it's pretty much unusable!

Thanks for this, although it would take a lot of admin to manage all the different pictures and distribute them, and the viewer could just download the picture and order or print them themselves. I don't mind them seeing that I have priced them up because it is marginal for what we have provided. I have contacted Photobox to see what they say so will post an update.
Meanwhile, I found another site which gives a tutorial on selling pictures online. I have only scanned it briefly but it links to a lot of sites:

Can you sell the same image more than once on Photographers Direct?0

If exclusive rights are sold then these would limit future sales. For example if you sold a picture with five years exclusive use for a greetings card, then for five years you could not sell that picture to anyone for a greetings card, but you could sell it say for use in a magazine.
Obviously the more exclusive the rights are that are sold the higher the price you would expect.0 -
If your image needs to be at least 3008 x 2000 to sell it, but it needs a little bit cropping off if it's a bit off centre or if it has something you need to crop off, is it better to leave it as it is and let them crop it if they wish (if you send them a digital copy)?0

You may struggle to sell an image like this.
If you crop it to look better then the image will be reduced and might not be large enough to be usable. On the other hand if you don't crop it and leave it up to the buyer, they may not like it because the main subject is too small and need cropping.
Keen photographer with sales in the UK and abroad.
Willing to offer advice on camera equipment and photography if i can!0 -
