  • :D Constructive criticism welcome - see my "buckets and spades" and "Best in Show" veggies in Food. And yes, I should have framed them a bit better!

Just seen your 'Best in Show', very nice and you've reminded me that I took some similar photos at our local show (mine aren't very good though).

I noticed that your picture is only 2070 pixels along it's longest side though...does this mean that British Images are more bothered about Image size rather than dimensions?

  • I agree with Jamlaw on the copyright issue , the photographer should have the copyright laws and photos purchased shoulkd not be made public or distributed 2 anyone, in da end the photographer OWNS the snaps as do the entertainment industry . Thanx
  • Just uploaded some pictures onto British Images...hopefully they are what they want on the site.

  • Thanks budget flyer for your realistic advice but it's a tad patronising and a wee bit snobbish to assume we're talking Kodak Instamatic and granddad with a hanky on his head at Blackpool's pleasure beach:-)

It was realistic, and well meant BTW.

I dont want to put anyone off, but at the same time, its no use even wasting time with the equivelent of an "instamatic"

Obviously the pics on the website look the same. Thats because they have been compressed for quick loading. The one you actually buy is maybe 24MB. I just bought one, it cost me $69 !! You can resize that to "poster size" no problem. Try doing that with the example on the web. It will be just a blur of squares.

I wasnt being patronising. I welcome and encourage entrepreneurism.Thats what has made Britain great after all!! But you have to be realistic .

If you really think you are good at it, buy the gear. The right gear will turn good photos into EXCELLENT photos.

If you aim for EXCELLENCE you have a chance of achieving it.
    HOWEVER
If your aim is AVERAGE, you are likely to achieve it. !
    Also
Very few people have succeeded who have spent NOTHING . - THATS A FACT
If you arent willing to risk even say 10% of your finances, deep down , you know(even though it might be the greatest idea ever !) it will fail !
If you BELIEVE - thats the magic word. You have to have it! if you do'nt have BELIEF- forget it.
If you believe your photos are good enough, buy a decent camera!!! The cost alone will force you to take better photos.

Would you want your wedding photos taken by someone who turns up with a £99 Xilim?
    That is the difference.

    Hi all,

If you think you have a really good pic, though, don't put it on stock. Try and get some decent money from it via places such as this site:

Ok ... so I registered, checked my sizings were acceptable, made sure I had all the keywords, categories, etc. But when I try to upload to British Images I keep getting told that I have to be a registered photographer to upload photos! I even have an email from them confirming that I registered!

I have emailed them (2 days ago) but still awaiting a reply. Anyone else had this problem?

    MAny thanks!!

I admire you're sentiment here, budgetflyer, and agree that self-belief is a big stepping stone on the way to success. Lack of self-belief can be one of the biggest stumbling blocks to success.

However, I have to disagree with your insistance on having to buy an expensive/decent camera in order to produce good shots. I have spent the last few years improving my photography skills, and spending a lot of my time coresponding with a number of talented togs from around the world. One of the things I humbly learnt early on is that it's the person behind the camera that produces the stunning image, and not the expensive equipment he/she uses.

Although good equipment can make it easier to capture what you want, without that image, inspiration and talent (and the self-belief you mention) you will be unlikely to capture that great image. Some of the worlds most stunning images have been taken with the cheapest and most basic of equipment.

I mean no disrepect, my friend, but "the vision" is more important than the equipment. Good luck to everyone who's looking to sell their prints, regardless of how the image was captured.

Folks....an important copyright issue that no one seems to have picked up on.

This thread was initially started as a way to sell images to sites where the images are downloaded for a few pence or few cents. Some people claim to have a reasonable income from this. This is dubious but my point is this.....
The last few posts have related to copyright issues and that the photographer retains it no matter what. This is very true.
HOWEVER, selling images to these micro sites like shutter stock and the others mentioned, is a sure fire way of losing the copyright without selling it.
The reason is that when your image is downloaded for a paltry 10p, you have no idea who has it. Or where it will be used.
So it could be downloaded, altered slightly and used as an advert for a product.....you've only received 10p for your image to be in a billboard on the main street but can you prove it's yours?
No chance - you have no idea who downloaded your image and now that it's been changed it's even harder to tell if it's yours.

The way to look at is, if it's good enough to sell, then why give it away for a few pence?

Jamlaw - If you believe that buying a better camera will give you better photos then your belief is sadly misplaced.
Does a chef buy better pots when he wants to make a better meal?
The photographer takes the photograph - the camera is merely a tool.

Has anyone tried selling their pictures on Imagekind.com You can have 1 gallery for free and you can put any markup you want. I love to play around with the different frames and papers that they offer you and they pay you for what you sell by paypal.

    Hey, Darich.

No, the point I was trying to get across is exactly the one you're making, only I didn't put it quite so well! I suggested that some cameras may make it easier to adjust to the settings you want, but you still need to know what you want, how to adjust the settings, how to use the light and so on.

And I totlly agree about the microsites, I wouldn't touch them with a 10ft pole!
