Changing Name - Driving Licence and Passport

I'm getting married next month and will be changing my name with the bank, my employer, the gas board etc.

My (IMO opinion extremely expensive) passport has another eight years to run so I planned on not getting a new one until it expired and just booking my flights in my old name but I wonder if that will affect my driving licence now they all seem to be kept on the same database?

I did think I would change the name on my driving licence but can I do one without the other? Anyone know?

Yes, you need to change your name on your licence (no charge except a stamp) and don't forget your V5c (AKA Log Book) if you are the registered keeper of a vehicle.

It is only the photo confirmation part that is linked, apart from that the DVLA and Passport Agency are entirely separate.

That's useful to know. Thank you.

You do not NEED to change anything.

    It is entirely your choice.
  • I changed the name on everything relating to my car, banks, utilities etc and the only thing I didn't change was my passport as it still had 3 years on it and I wasn't wasting it!

Made no difference whatsoever, just book tickets in the name on the passport.

Your marriage certificate is simply proof you have the right to call yourself Mrs Whatever, but you don't have to if you don't want to. You could leave everything in your maiden name if you wanted to.
  • As above. My wife kept her passport in her maiden name until it expired, but changed her driving licence immediately. It was just something we had to remember when booking flights for a few years.
  • You don't have to change your name on your passport until it renews however, remember when you book flights your name has to match the passport.

Also, plenty of places like a passport as ID, if your passport doesn't match the name you use it may turn into a liability.

I think if I was abroad a lot, especially outside Europe, there is potential for hassle if your passport does not match the name on all your other documents that might be worth paying the money.

However, it is not unusual to travel on a maiden name passport, so I wouldn't make too big a deal out of it. I would take a copy of your marriage certificate just in case.

Thanks everyone. I'm not losing my maiden name, I'm losing my late husband's name so really should change it.
My partner doesn't care what I call myself and I may have kept my maiden name but I don't think it's fair to him to have another man's name.
Helpful to know that I don't have to change my driving licence or V5. What about car insurance? I'd hate to give the beggars an excuse not to pay out in the even of a claim.

  • No need to change your name until time comes when you have to renew your license card.

Well, I know it's personal, but I've re-married a widow who has kept her name, and I've kept my name which was also taken from my wife so neither of us are known by our own names (and I divorced). We are both comfortable also to answer to each other's surname in view of the inevitable confusion! After 30 years, it's just what we are called.

Can you cash a cheque in a different name without hassle?
