Off with stress - acceptable activities

I’m currently off with stress and wondered if it’s okay to go out while off and do everyday activities. I stay close to my place of employment and chances are I would be seen but don’t want to be couped up all day?

I'm no expert, but i would have thought that any activity that you find to be stress-releaving would be fine. A walk in the fresh air would be high on that list I'd say.
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 3.24% of current retirement "pot" (as at end December 2025)
  • I agree with sea shell. Are you in the union? Maybe ask them? Just to cover yourself. I also think it depends on what you are thinking about doing.
  • Walking, running - supermarket shopping.

I think having a night at the pub would be taking the mickey but anything essential carry on..
  • Viksviks84 - no not in a union, the company doesn’t have one.

Thanks all or the replies, I was concerned as my work has an attitude of ‘if your well enough to be out your well enough to work’ which I agree on principle if you are off with flu etc but not stress.

RedfordML - definitely not going to the pub ha.

A night of day at the pub with friends can help reduce stress a lot!

    Anyhow back to OP.

It's stress here. the ridiculous idea that you should be huddled up like someone off with a virus is ridiculous. However you should know better than us how your workplace would react.
  • Carrott007 I agree!

Thank you, it’s wrong to feel you should be confined to your home. Fresh air is one of the best things. I need to stop caring about the opinion of others.

My view is you can do what you want, including a night in the pub. But that's based on the places I've worked which have generally had a really supportive and understanding culture. The last place I worked at people off with stress would come to work dos and no one would bat an eyelid.

I think the problem here is the employer, not the employee. It's fine to do anything you want to do whilst you are off with stress and doing some enjoyable activities seems like a good thing. Going to work for someone else would be stretching it a bit.
What are you going to do when you go back to work? What were the causes of stress and how are they going to be different?

Enjoy your trip to the hairdressers, and there's no need to start a new thread/ username for each related question!

Companies don't have unions. An employee has the legal right to join whichever union would be best to represent them, given the type of work they do and their type of workplace.
